Women always get really excited about my husband's accent until they see that I'm with him. Then they seem annoyed at me for marrying a Brit! Well they can go find their own!

There's been a few tiimes where people have asked if I'm British too. I have an obvious Wisconsin accent. I just smile and take it as a compliment.

Most of the time I don't think they realize we are married despite the fact we're holding hands and wearing matching wedding bands. When they do, it doesn't always stop them. It is hard to sometimes keep a straight face when they are talking to him. Aside from the obivious flirting....the questions they ask him sometimes are just horrible.

I will say that the weirdest thing I have encountered is I have had a few people ask me to do a British accent when they find out Gareth is British. That is just weird and I don't get that at all.

Ditto. People say, "Well, you lived there for 12 years, how come you don't sound British?"

Duh, I'm American, I'm not Madonna, and I don't have any hang-ups about sounding like I'm an American.

I can't stand it when people put on fake accents (i.e. Madonna).

When I get asked to do a British accent or to say something British, I try really hard to just say no and not roll my eyes. It can be really difficult.

I'm gathering that the women of Milwaukee really are like they were portrayed in Love Actually.

I don't know about Milwaukee, but the women in Sacramento, CA are like the women portrayed in Love Actually.

I guess she no longer has to drink pints of bitter to fit in

Her and Gwyneth's English affectations used to wind me up more than they rationally should

I know! Is it because neither you nor I felt the need to do so, or because it's like they're giving us a bad name?

I think it's both.

And also they are both like "oh people are so cultured here in england - they read books" because they've only just discovered the joys of reading themselves

Yeah, Bill is good at doing the "posh" English accents but not the "cockney" as he refers to it. I've never heard a convincing English accent that isn't posh from an American!

Sometimes when I'm in the kitchen making tea, he and his dad put on posh accents and talk to each other.

:bonk:

The exception is Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnell, although I think his father is English (though he is a posh baron or something!)

That sounds like summat that I'm familiar with..... No porkies from me 'bout that.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Nah, there's plenty of ignorant Brits too.

Talk about not leaving the country, and theirs is TINY....

This thread has turned into slagging off the Yanks yet again, shocking. No one said anyone HAD to come live here in the land of ignorance & idiots.

(Sidetracked there - sorry, Maven)

No probs, dev. You know how I feel about slagging off the Yanks -- not in my presence, thank you very much. ;)

And BTW, I do an AWESOME Peggy Mitchell.

I think Madge & Gwynie represent that whole "oh were so embarassed to be one of the savage yanks we are going to OVERCOMPENSATE" type of expat that I found super annoying.

One of my American friends over there was just like that and sent me ape$hit although god knows it was somehow hard not get annoyed by the mindless stereotyping and knee-jerk reactions you would get from some Brits the moment you would open your mouth.

And BTW, I do an AWESOME Peggy Mitchell.

how many $1 well gins does it take to get you to do it?
