My husband and I were just reminiscing on my trip to Nigeria. We are laughing over a particular day during my trip. We had been staying at his home (with 13 other family members) for over a week. We decided that we wanted to have some privacy and I wanted to go swimming in a pool somewhere. So we got in a taxi and headed over to the Excellence hotel. On our way there in the taxi we were pulled over by the police standing on the corner. This was the THIRD time already in two weeks that this had happened. This time they asked me for my passport but I had mistakenly forgotten it at his house. They tried to hold us up due to me not having it. Basically they just wanted money but since we had already gone thru this twice, we were'nt giving in so easily this time. My husband (fiance at the time) told them they were not immigration and had no right to ask for my passport. That got them mad and they put us back in the taxi, they got in too and had the taxi driver drive to their post (I felt so bad for the taxi guy). My husband called his father and he showed up with this mother and sister. They called a police offical that they knew and told him what was happening. The official asked to speak with the policemen. Several minutes later, they told us we could go. lol. The taxi man who was still there asked us if we wished to still go to the Excellence Hotel. I wanted to say 'take me to the airport, I'd had enough'.....but instead, I just said, yes, lets go. When we got to the hotel, we approached the front desk and asked for a room. The people working there were very nice, but I couldn't help thinking that they were looking at us kind of funny. So anyhow, a few minutes later we had our key and were heading up the stairs. When I asked my husband what's our room number....he laughed and said 'You're not going to believe this"......I said, "huh??"........believe me, at this point I could believe anything. He told me to just keep walking. After four flights of stairs and walking down a hall he finally stopped in front of our door. I looked up and the room that they had given us was ROOM 419. We died laughing. Was this a coincidence or were they trying to be sarcastic??? I'm not so sure. We took a pic of us in front of the room ( I put it on my profile ). We look at it now and laugh. I'd love to hear any funny stories anyone else has to tell about their trip. Particularily to Western Africa. ;)

That was funny. I almost missed it and had to think hard to figure out the what the 419 was. :bonk: One odd thing that happened to us was we were almost taken to the police for being terrorist. One day on the way back home from work, my husband and I caught a cab and as usual these cabs stop and pick up other people. Well, the cab picked up an older man and woman who once they heard me speaking English they started to talk to the cab driver in native language. They were saying that the heard terrorist were in the country disguised at tourist and they drive around in cabs making plans to bomb the country etc. Now, the old man looked and smelled like palm wine so I thought who'd care what he was saying. Anyway, the cab driver was visibly shaken and nervous and through the entire bumpy ride. As this conversation went on and on my husband was translating to me what they were saying and they were getting more and more frantic. Finally he told them that he understood what they were saying and we weren't terrorist. There was more discussion about it and we actually were taken to the police station but the organization I worked with was well known and police didn't listen to the driver or the other passengers. I could not believe the fear these people had of us just because we were speaking English in a cab

Sigh

The longer it takes to introduce yourself the less you've actually accomplished

I'm sorry but I don't get it. I have been really quiet...waiting for someone to actually comment on the irony so that I can post and say: that is tooooo funny

BUT

No one has spilled the beans. I thought Chispas was about to say it...my mouth got all watery and then boom ...nothing.

So I guess I'm a little sloooooooooooooooooow. So please enlighten me on the punch line

Section 419 is the section of the law (I believe Nigerian Law) that is to prosecute scammers.

As my husband would say....NA WA OOOOO!!!!! Sorry, I just assumed everyone knew what 419 would mean. The term is synonymous with scamming. When they put us in room 419 I was wondering if they were trying to say that my husband was scamming me. ;)
