BRECKSVILLE -- A kitten has its paws back above ground thanks to the tireless efforts of a Roto-Rooter crew that came to its rescue when no one else would.

Workers at Summit Health Care in Brecksville noticed the kitten down in the pipe Friday morning.

They called a variety of agencies to rescue the baby cat, but say everyone either declined to help or were unreachable.

That's when a crew from Roto-Rooter arrived.

Larry Ozanick and Michael Zenker orchestrated the complicated rescue which lasted more than 6 hours.

The kitten had somehow managed to fall down an 8 inch PVC pipe that dropped down 7 feet. The pipe then separated into a 'Y' branching out 125 feet in length.

Roto-Rooter brought with it the sophisticated equipment used in its work to clear drains and pipes. Those tools included a drain snake equipped with a remote camera. That allowed the rescuers to keep an eye on the frightened animal as they tried to reach it. The company also brought in a staff of 6 to help the frightened kitten.

In the end all the effort paid off as the kitten, looking a bit bedraggled, was pulled back above ground.

Larry Ozanick, who helped spearhead the rescue effort says it appears the baby cat had been in the drain since Monday or Tuesday after falling through an open grate in the woods near the office.

The kitten was taken immediately to a veterinarian to be checked out. After that, the kitten was to be taken home to become the newest member of the Ozanik household.

Larry says the plans are right now to name the kitten, Roto.
