Are we supposed to be outraged by mass-executions?

What happened the whole cut-off-his-nuts-and-string-him-from-a-tree brigade? Surely at least one person should be saying "nice one Iran" or something similar.

Nice one Iran

Adultery and alcohol are a stretch though, but that's cultural

That's one way of putting it... Though there's nothing "cultural" about it - anymore than a North Korean firing squad is "cultural".

I'm not an expert to define culture, but I would say - yeah, it is..

Well, the good news is, that as\ capitial punishment is such strong deterrant, this should be one of the last times Iran has to execute anyone.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Are you trying to be sarky?

That idea only can be debated with democracies--not with mullahcracy (such as Iran), absolute degenerate-monarchy (Saudi) or military autocracy (lots of examples).

Dunno mate - but an awful people seem to admire the Iranian style of doing things when someone gets a judicial sentence that individuals deem too lenient.

Iran is our Emmanuel Goldstein when it suits us - and ignored when it doesn't.

Iran hopes that executing drug dealers and thugs will send a strong warning to criminals.

"We have demonstrated our serious determination to combat organised, international and group crimes which disturb order and the security of our citizens," Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi told the state broadcaster.

"We believe that executing these thugs reflects the Islamic republic's will to confront such crimes."

From the article. They place a great deal of faith in the idea that these executions will send a clear and determined message to these criminals. So, if they are right, then executions will only be necessary every once in a while.

Personally, I am against the death penalty in all circumstances for a variety reasons, not least that it isn't a deterrent but if they are right and I am wrong, then surely the death penalty will only be necessary infrequently? If they start doing this sort of thing on a regular basis then the deterrant argument is provably nonsensicle.

As far as this goes - its not far off what used to happen in the middle-ages where people would be arrested for frivolous things and strung up not for the purposes of punishment but to keep everyone else in line.

There's not really any logic to it.

More or less what I stated earlier

There's not really any logic to it.
