Alright. I am finally here. I had to wait for an hour at JFK to get my visa stamped, but it was all worth it. The question now is - what are the next steps? They said the green card will come in about 2 months, same with social security #. I want to go on vacation outside of the U.S., is there anything I should keep in mind as far as docs go? What do I need to do now?

Your green card will arrive within 7 weeks or so and since you already have a SS#, you can go to their office to change your status on that number. Give the USCIS about 2 weeks to enter your info before going to the SSA office to update your SS#.

If you plan to travel outside of the US before getting your green card all you have to do is show your stamped passport at POE so they can let you in without any problems.

Mononoke28 is correct :star:

Me and my wife travelled to Canada and came back to the U.S without any issues by showing her Immigrant Visa on the Indian Passport...

At Canadian POE and U.S POE, they had asked some basic questions and verified my U.S Passport and her Indian Passport with CR1 Immigrant Visa on it, that's all :dance::dance:

Note:- We have already received her SS Card in 13 days :dance::dance:

Oh Hi Diana and thanks! I read that someone was talking about filing a form to get the GC after arrival and that individual was also dealing with a CR-1. That got me wondering because the customs just told me the card will come in 2 months.

Who's that person ? Is it you - PERSON ?

USCIS will mail the plastic green card soon after arrival. If you wait for more than 30 days after arrival, you can contact USCIS to query about it, that's all...

(reviving this topic instead of starting a new one - since my question was partially answered)

I am wondering, is the green card generated *automatically* upon arrival in the U.S. on a CR-1 visa? I didn't fill out any other paperwork beyond all the stuff that got us to the interview at the embassy... which I think is the normal process. I just don't remember the customs official saying anything about the green card being mailed. (Of course it's all a blur now!)

We received my husband's SS card in about 10 days. It has now been about a month since he has been in the county.

Seems like 2 months or so is normal, so I won't worry. But if it doesn't show up by the new year, *where* do I check? That same USCIS site that used to drive me crazy when I was waiting for the I-130 approval?? Oh joy.

Thanks so much for any input. I don't think I need to worry yet but then again I realized I have no clue about this part of the process...

Just FYI if anyone comes across this topic in a search:

I never found out who I should write/call if the green card didn't automatically arrive. Luckily it did without us doing ANYTHING. Almost 6 weeks after entry.

Now I'm USCIS-free for nearly two years. (But yes, I'm already stockpiling the "bona fides" fun, fun fun)

Hope this helps anyone.

Hang in there - hard as it is to believe, there IS an end to this journey!!!
