OK now this is a dumb question, I have seen a few post here and there about the consul not allowing co-sponsors in the Philippines, can they do that? I think one of the post I saw was in the K3 forum and I seen one here in the CR1 forum. Can anyone enlighten me? I know the K3 is a different visa then a cr1 but can the consul make their own rules?

YES, the consulates can and often do have their own set of rules....BUT regarding your question, I think you will find more posts where joint sponsors were allowed in the Philippines then the two you found stating they were not allowed. I can think of a few recent members from the Philippines who used a joint sponsor and did not have a problem.

The only reason I can think for a joint sponsor not being allowed is if the consulate found some sort of a "problem" with the Affidavit of Support information, or required updated or additional info, and the applicants were not able to provide it. It would be interesting to know more about on the situations you found. Can you give us a link to the posts?

Yeah I was one of the posters. Saw where a K3 was disallowed to use a co sponsor. First time I've ever seen such in 4 years or so of banging around immigration forums.

Not being able to use co sponsors at USEM first popped up at a Virtual interview session with a CO from USEM years ago in Davao. If I remember correctly the CO was asked about the use of co sponsors and he replied it was all up to the CO.

Yes the COs are basically GOD for a day in your life!

Hopefully pshbrk will chime in, he's been around for a long time and would probably know of specific cases where this happened. He therefore may be able to provide more information that would be useful to you.

In any case, I think that what is being said is that a CO can do whatever they whish, and having a joint sponsor is not a gurantee of any sort. I think that can be said for any embasy, not just the Philippines.

I think looking at recent cases would give you a better indication of what to expect. I have seen a few recent posters get through USEM with a joint sponsor, so it also certainly not a gurantee of a denial.

The problem is more common with K visas and particularly K1 but I've certainly seen visas issued in Manila for all categories using co-sponsors. CO's are not so much concerned with "meeting requirements" as being satisfied the applicant won't become a public charge. Many cases with co-sponsors have other issues of financial concern. It's impossible to predict what will happen but a recent college graduate using a co-sponsor is more likely to succeed than say, a GED burger flipper is. In general, CO's don't actually think a co-sponsor is going to be supporting the immigrant and if it looks like that would be needed, they're not too keen on it, as they take the public charge issue pretty seriously.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

Hi, what about cr-1 visas? I am a learning machinist and did not make the 17,000 something needed to qualify becuse I was not working 3 months while in the philppines and after. Do they look at the co-sponser situation different with the CR-1? I am currently living with my parents who make 110,000 dollars a year and have them as a cosponser and they are even going to write a letter saying it is ok for me and my wife to stay here with them until she works and we can move out. Hope we wont have a problem with the co-sponser help at her interview?
