Can i have a state issued ID before i get the EAD card?

Hi there I was about to apply for state ID here in california, but the officer that my husband and I talked to at DMV santa ana office says that I can't be issued one because my I-94 CARD ALREADY EXPIRED. So now I have to wait for my Work permit before I can apply for SSN, STATE ID AND DRIVER'S LICENSE. So lesson learned was to apply for SSN,STATE ID AND DRIVER'S LICENSE BEFORE YOUR I-94 EXPIRES,so you dont have until your work permit comes to apply for those. Good luck to everyone.

My wife has one. Though it is by mistake. They let her keep it even after the DMV realized its own mistake. We found this out the hard way. According to some little old lady at the Wisconsin DMV service centerwe went to, wife has to to have I797 that says under "notice type": APPROVED Not the "Receipt" one that you get.

That proves legal status in the country. Wife passed her written driving test, but they wouldn't give her the permit card till she had I797 that says the above.

She just got EAD card production ordered 7-24-08. Now we can go back there.

i went to apply and they told me to go to another office , went there and the lady there asked me for my passport ( i-94), SSC, all AOS NOA's ( the envelopes are so important they need them to have proof that you are living at that adress) , our Marriage certificate, copied them and give me a paperwork to fill out ( name - age - adress - ... ), and told me that she will send me a document so i can take it with me to apply for a STATE ID.

i got that letter today ( NON US Citizen document verification ) now i can apply for a State ID.

i tried to get a state id on my first week here, but i was told i need social security number before i can be issued a state id. on the other hand, i understand that i wont be issued the ssn until i get the ead...

and so on and so forth.

lesson for me: be patient and just wait for the ead. soon everything will be in order.

i entered as a K1 visa holder and a week after i applied for SSN and it was ok , actually it depends on where you are in the USA because the law differ from state to state.

In WA, yes we got it based upon Passport, K-1 VISA, SS# and other home bills with the name on it.
