I got this card in the mail from this company called Directbuy.

membership to save thousands of dollars of retail items.

Anyways,

The lady on the phone said that if we came to the presentation that we would get 2 free gifts ( one being a Dell computer) plus a chance to try our key ( was attached to postcard) in a lock to see if we win $50,000.00 makeover or take the cash.

I looked online about this company and it looks like it's had alot of complaint. Pay 5000.00 to join their club plus 300 a year fee. Ya have to make up your mind that day or you can never join.

Just wondering if anyone actually went to thier presentation and if they really did get the free gifts?

Sounds like a timeshare type deal to me and if we actually went there would be no way that we would buy into this even with their pressure tactics.

I haven't been (so can't tell you anything from experience) but to me, it sounds like you'd be made to sit there for hours on end whilst they pound you full of marketing strategy.

I'd be interested in hearing if you actually could get a PC out of it (I'm sure it would be bottom of the range tho) but perhaps it comes down to this - how much would you be willing to put up with to get it? :D

I have heard about them for a while. I'll pass on the huge fees to join and stick with Costco.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I went to a presentation several years ago in KC with a friend. We were both looking at buying our first homes...looking at fixer-uppers we could make money on. So we thought we'd both go and find out what they had to offer. They want several thousand dollars to join, if I remember right. The part that got me was that they wouldn't even let you see or compare their prices unless you paid the several thousand dollars for the membership (I think that's about what the cost was  ). The sales girl was a hottie who gave off the vibe that she had probably had plenty of success flirting her way into a lot of sales with male customers. I do remember a tight shirt, a big rack, and a very tight skirt. After a while though, I was pretty annoyed that I had spent time going through the sales pitch and all the the salesgirl would tell me was how much I could save...but wouldn't show me any prices. As soon as I figured out I wasn't going to see any prices for sure, I decided I was going to waste as much of her time as I could (and enjoy the view). I asked questions for probably an hour or so, made small talk, etc., and it finally got to the point where she asked quite sternly "Are you going to join or not?" :ranting: I just said, "mmmm, nah".

My friend ended up joining, but he went to another Direct Buy dealer in KC to get his membership. I just called him and he said the start-up cost is around $4000-$5000 now, and $100/year to renew after that. He said he's found some things at other stores that have been cheaper than Direct Buy, but not many. He thinks most things at Direct Buy average about 65-70% of what it costs at a regular retail store. But if you shop around enough, you can probably get prices somewhat close to those of Direct Buy. He and his wife are really unhappy with Direct Buy at the present moment because they ordered and paid about $3500 for a bedroom set four months ago and it still hasn't shipped, despite Direct Buy telling them about every two weeks or so that "oh, it's shipping this week".

Never heard of them! But the timeshare things are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I do these all the time. You only have to sit through their seminar for about an hour then tell them you are not interested.

Last time I went to Hawaii, it cost me $400 for a week in a VERY nice hotel including a rental car. And only an hour out of my life.

Only an hour? About six or seven years ago, I got stuck in one of those for about three hours...NEVER AGAIN!!!! If the salesguy told me how stupid I was for not buying a timeshare one more time, I would probably still be in jail today. I only kept my cool so I could get the free...whatever they were giving away. It wasn't worth it for me. F*ckers!

The key is, after they are done, you just say that you just can't do it right now, and give me my gift. Sure they get pissed, but you will never see them again.

I've never spent more than an hour and I do these all the time. With the vacations, they usually save at least a couple thousand dollars.
