And Fischkoepfin, I'm not saying WalMart is just wonderful and great & whatnot...but I am so sick of the 'evil WalMart' angle. Suppliers don't have to supply them. Consumers don't have to buy stuff. And if xyz company outsources jobs so they can stay competitive and supply walmart, well thats their choice!

No one's forcing anyone to do anything. And ultimately, I feel it boils down to the consumer. They don't have huge parking lots for no reason!

I agree in that people need to take responsibility for their own problems, but that does not release companies from taking responsibility.

As to the 'evil Walmart'-angle, that is what I expected to find in the article chocolaterie posted and in the review that I posted later in the thread. But I was positively surprised to actually find an economic analysis that is not just an assortment of random anecdotes but based in hard data. As I said, I agree that consumers and suppliers have a choice to shop at and co-operate with Walmart, but the problem goes way beyond that to choices that Walmart makes, and it is those choices that are the real problem with the company and for which Walmart should be blamed.

Persuasion as in if you are poor then you will probably buy the cheapest loaf of bread and the cheapest clothes. You could buy a loaf of bread and a t shirt at more ethical stores but you could buy a lot more at a Walmart perhaps. Nobody is forced but people are persuaded. Are you suggesting that if an argument can not be applied to a court case then it can not be applied to a person who shops in Walmart?

6 pages on walmart! I didn't expect such a responsive audience!

I too agree, I am guilty of shopping at walmart. I guess that's why I felt so horrible after learning of their business and employee practices.

But change is never too late. My husband and I still live on one income, low prices or not, we're going to start shopping more at family stores. I've already made it a habit to talk to managers/owners to find out if the businesses I visit are family owned.

wal-mart is capitalism at its most evil form...

Kinda funny how I see the big trucks that have the "Buy American" stickers at Wal mart..

It's especially funny and sad when you see how they're forcing their vendors to outsource to China, Indonesia, anywhere there is dirt cheap labor to bring their goods onto their shelves...

Funny, they opened Wal Mart Supercenter in Jakarta, Indonesia but it didn't stand very long.

It entered Indonesia in 1996, but tucked tail soon after a Jakarta store was looted and torched during the 1997-98 riots.

I am pretty ignorant on the whole wal mart thing.....but seeing that so many ppl feel that Wal Mart is capable of bringing the whole of America down on it's economic knees....isn't there any kind of government body that actually looks into the practices and effects of larges stores like the 'evil Wal mart' in the States?

Well, I have to admit to being a Walmart shopper too.

Coming to you from BrokeButt Mountain here off in the boondocks(may as well be) and only on one small income (for a few weeks yet anyway) we have to go where it's cheapest...I mean, we HAVE to if we're gonna eat supper every night. I guess we could start every other night.... ;)

I'm not saying I agree with the practices, or whatever..at all..but I'm sure that many other companies are doing the same thing, and like others have said, Walmart is just the (oh gawd, I'm gonna do it too) current target.

I can't afford to have a big social concience at this point in my life(and not to sound demeaning...truly believe that's GREAT if you do!) I'm just tryin' to survive MY life, family intact, etc etc right now! :) M.

:ot:

PS..REBA..if you read this...hey...I've lived in WI my whole life, but we always had friends in NC and went there once or twice a year when I was growin' up...I thought it was cool when you said Hickory as it's not a really big town...I've been there!!! :) (how exciting hey?? haha) Do you know where Vale is??? That's the tiny!! town we used to go to. Beautiful!! state, I might add! Loved it there..... :) :) :) M.
