If Wal-Mart are the purest form of capitalism then the saying “capitalism, law of the jungle” most certainly applies to Wal-Mart. Last time I was in a Wal-Mart it was like a jungle in there, a zoo of people almost running almost over each other trying to get at the shelves. It was pure insanity; I’d rather pay a slightly higher price or shop around for a good deal and keep my sanity.

I’m certainly not a Wal-Mart fan; I’m no fan of extreme capitalism it’s pure greed in my opinion. I prefer not to support greed and don’t support Wal-Mart and their anti competitive practices or their “sweat shop” labor from overseas.

here we go again Americas national pass time bash Wal Mart.

No-one forces anyone to either supply their goods to or to shop at WalMart.

ITA with this

That's all I can say about the Vlassic angle. No one put a gun to their heads. And furthermore, if they made money (even a penny) off each thing sold, then they're in profit. It's basic economics. You're not making enough? Build a cheaper pickle or don't sell it at the price you're selling it at.

Vlasic, for example, wasn't looking to build its brand on a gallon of whole pickles

...then they shouldn't have made one!

" Vlasic got to take it down to just over half a gallon of pickles, for $2.79.

Seems like a fair deal to me...what's the problem?

Not long after that, in January 2001, Vlasic filed for bankruptcy--although the gallon jar of pickles, everyone agrees, wasn't a critical factor.

So then why is this whole article about an effing gallon jar of pickles? It's used as an examle of how wal-mart and the big bad gallon jar killed vlassic, then at the end admits it wasn't a factor.

Sounds like someone with an exr to grind with Wal-mart/

Now Wal-Mart is sucky cos the nature of the big assed store drives out the little mom & pop stores....so the only way to prevent that is to go to the mom & pop stores. But if shoppers have 'price' as their bottom line, well then why SHOULD they go anywhere else? Yes it sucks that mom & pop are going out of business, but times change & companies either adapt or die. it's as simple as that. It sucks, but it's not wal-mart's fault...it's the consumers' fault!

Me? I honestly hate the super-walmart stores..they are too damned big! And if I was ever in there, I would wait on a queque for a live cashier rather than go to the self-serve...because if the self-serve takes off, there goes more jobs. It is up to the consumers to place the bar & tell wal-Mart what's acceptable and what's not.

But the stores are too big for my tastes and I'd rather pay a few dollars more for the convenience of a smaller, less confusing store.

its like the chicken and the egg thing, which comes first? The consumer "demanding" cheaper prices, or Wal Mart offering cheaper prices and then the consumer won't (or in some cases, can't afford to) shop anywhere else?

Personally I think its the latter, but that's just my opinion.

I love capitalism, that being said I also love smalltown America, so does WalMart. They set up shop in small towns, drive the little merchants out with "great low prices" then they raise them as their competition has dirt thrown over their gravesites. I lived in NE Pa and can't tell you how many little downtowns were wiped off the face of the earth because of Walmart. They don't use American vendors, they don't care about America or American jobs, they don't care about their workforce, just the cheapest...everything, goods, labor, benefits, and whose giving them the best interest rate...

:(

We have no Walmart/Target/Costco/Sam's Club/etc anywhere near us and sometimes I wish we did, but then I'm even more sad to hear that Ma & Pa's are not able to make it anymore. I love to support the "little guy" as much as I can....supporting the American dream.

Edited to add....glad I don't eat all that many pickles! And it kinda IS disgusting to sell things in such quantities that they know people will buy them because it's so cheap, knowing full well that some people won't be able to finish the product before it goes bad and then will buy another dang gallon. Such a waste. I HATE that big families can get a better price per pound say on a package of chicken than I can. But I'm not about to buy it to get the savings and then just have it go to waste. So I'm forced to pay more....grrrrrrrrr!

I don't shop at wal-mart, just because going in there puts me in a bad mood, it's HUGE, I have to walk a mile just to find what I'm looking for, when I get there they never have it and snotty kids are always running around screaming. Hate the place, and their veggies are flavorless!

A few months ago there was an article I read talking about how Snapper told Wal*Mart they would no longer allow their lawn mowers to be sold there. Snapper makes a high quality, higher cost product here in the US that lasts many years. W*M wanted them to push their production to China to lower costs, like the other mowers they sell. The ones that last a season or two and then you have to buy a new one cause they break.

That is why W*M is evil. They don't care about anything but their profits. If they can lower the price of a product by 10% by putting thousands of Americans out of work, they'll do it.

This has a happy ending: Snapper continues to sell their mowers through their traditional vendors, they're profitable, their vendors make money, and Americans can buy a quality, made in America product that they can depend on.

//suck it, W*M

I wanna know what's going on in your wal-marts. poor management maybe? The only thing I hate about my wal-mart is finding a place to park. (I'm hugely pregnant and they don't have stork parking there :( )

the store is layed out perfectly, they rarely move things around so I can always find stuff, sure there are lots of shoppers but there are also lots of employees. If the lines get too long I hear a "Code 50" which BTW is a call for more cashiers, meaning get your a$$ off the floor and come ring these people out. The prices are great there. I can't afford to buy $5 rolls of tin foil at the grocery store when I can get it for 75cents at wal mart.

About Unions: Wal Mart does not tell you that you can't talk to Unions. They tell you that you can't talk to Unions ON WALMART PROPERTY or ON WALMART'S TIME. Meaning, you want to talk to unions, do it on your own time. That actually sounds like a reasonable request to me. As an employer they have the right to tell you what you are supposed to do on the clock. As property owners they have the right to tell you what to do on their property.

As you guessed, I used to work for Wal Mart. I worked on the floor in the domestics department. It was an easy quick job to get when I needed to work at night so I didn't have to pay a sitter (while I was still married to my ex) They hired me on at more than minimum wage and gave me the hours that I wanted and needed. It was not a bad place to work for retail.

There are other big bad companies to go after.. why doesn't anyone bash them?
