Sadly where we live if we boycotted Walmart grocery shopping would not be easy for us and it would cost a fortune in the small stores!

Gary objects to Walmart's power and whenever possible we shop elsewhere.

However on the employment side, I have 2 close friends who work there and they are both pretty happy

The shopping experience sucks at the Wal-Mart. Target is better. It's as simple as that.

I agree, Target beats Walmart anyday. But, Walmart is 30 minutes from me and the nearest Target is 1 1/2 hours away. So, I shop at Walmart. I find the cheapest prices I can and it just happens that those are at Walmart. If I could find cheaper prices at another store, I would.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

 same here. I'm on a budget so unless someone wants to give me more money to shop at stores with higher prices, I'm going to walmart for basic needs. I've done my grocery shopping lately at Publix, & Kash n Karry(local chain grocery stores) because they are near my new house, but it's atleast $10 more than shopping at walmart!! I'd rather drive an extra 5 mins to walmart. Sorry I just don't buy the whole anti walmart thing right now, and only those who can afford not to shop at walmart can be anti walmart.

Every store started out independent. And every store wishes to succeed, and become better known. And then eventually they find another part of town wants their products, so they open another store...and so on....until the independent store is a chain, which then becomes hated, for succeeding. And then another independent store may form, and people against chain stores will tell ppl to shop there instead, and then what happens when THAT store gets so popular they have to open more locations? And then eventually they will be disliked as well for being a chain store. It's a ridiculous cycle. It's like ppl I know who like rock bands, and tell everyone they should listen to them, but once everyone likes that band, the original person who told them to like it doesn't think it's cool anymore, since too many people like them now.

Walmart is an evil corporation indeed. I would suggest people see a documentary called The Corporation. I will also say that i am guilty of shopping in Walmart and i agree Target is better but as for the corporate side they are both buying cheap and selling cheap. They both to a degree exploit their workers no doubt. Their workers might not feel exploited but they could in theory be given better pay and better benefits etc. Of course people shop there because it is cheap and they don`t have much money so they cant afford to be picky. That is the cycle of capitalism sadly. You can then follow it back to the Federal Reserve and those who control the value of money in the first place. The people who lose out are those who make the goods for a minute fraction of the cost of the item.

I really do suggest you check out the Corporation.

I do have a choice when it comes to groceries...there are about 5 grocery stores within 2 miles of me...but if I shop there it gets a lot more costly than shopping at walmart. And like I said, why should I pay more at other stores that pay their employees little also and don't give benefits, but because they are not walmart they are somehow better? Or do they just fly under the radar since they aren't as big as walmart.

I love capitalism, that being said I also love smalltown America, so does WalMart. They set up shop in small towns, drive the little merchants out with "great low prices" then they raise them as their competition has dirt thrown over their gravesites. I lived in NE Pa and can't tell you how many little downtowns were wiped off the face of the earth because of Walmart. They don't use American vendors, they don't care about America or American jobs, they don't care about their workforce, just the cheapest...everything, goods, labor, benefits, and whose giving them the best interest rate...

All done for the next 10 years...

Now more then ever..."and Miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep"

Yes this thread has not even started on environmental concerns etc but of course you could talk about Coca Cola or Mcdonald`s just as easily. I guess Walmart is like the goliath right now though.

This is Capitalism, and trust me, it´s not Walmart that´s doing it.

what IS Walmart doing then?

and yes, it is capitalism. the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Sorry, I meant to say that it´s not ONLY Walmart that´s doing it. If you´ll boycot every company abusing capitalism, you´d stop buying anything.

Steve Dobbins has been bearing the brunt of that switch. He's president and CEO of Carolina Mills, a 75-year-old North Carolina company that supplies thread, yarn, and textile finishing to apparel makers--half of which supply Wal-Mart. Carolina Mills grew steadily until 2000. But in the past three years, as its customers have gone either overseas or out of business, it has shrunk from 17 factories to 7, and from 2,600 employees to 1,200. Dobbins's customers have begun to face imported clothing sold so cheaply to Wal-Mart that they could not compete even if they paid their workers nothing.

That's the reason people here in North Carolina can't afford to shop anywhere else BUT Wal Mart. Because they don't have jobs anymore. And for every one job that opens up, there are hundres of people who need it. And in some towns, the only jobs available now are at Wal Mart because they've knocked everybody else out of business :P Here in town where the Wal Mart is, all the Ma & Pop shops in that plaza have closed up.

Now Wal Mart is going to open up a Super Store, and they've bought up some land, actually kicking out residents who've lived there for decades! They bullied the city into selling them the vacant land, and bullied the home owners close-by into selling as well.

Is that "good business"?

I avoid Wal Mart whenever possible. For the time being, we still have a K-Mart here in town, so I shop there instead, or I drive into Hickory about half an hour away. We don't however have a Costco anywhere near us, (closest one is the far side of Charlotte I think) so we do occasionally go to Sam's Club for pig ears for the dogs. I am ashamed to say it, but they've got bags of 25 ears there for only $9.99, and even in their Wal Mart stores, a bag of 10 ears can be as much as $11.99. That's about all I buy there anymore, and if a Costco were to open up locally, I'd quickly switch.

I guess if they're the only employer and retailer left in some towns, you gotta do what you gotta do. But for now I still have options, so I shop elsewhere. They can't employ all 17,000 people here, we need to keep the other shops open.
