I'm having my husband's COE and paystub notarized here in the Philippines. It's much cheaper over here. Would the consul still accept notarized documents in the PHilippines or does it have to be notarized in the US?

In USA most places are free to get a notary stamp. Banks, Friends, etc...

Very easy in USA for one to become a Notary

Only the actual I-134 needs to be notarized, not all the accompanying documentation.

And notaries are not supposed to charge for their services AFAIK. Its possible the laws are different in every state, but any notary I've spoken to here says they are not supposed to charge fees.

is it really necessary to have all the letter of employment, bank statement and paystub notarized?

If he's being quoted $10, he's going to the wrong place. He should go to his insurance agent or bank to get notarization done for free. However, Notaries notarize signatures. The only document that needs a notary is the I-134.

Notaries do not notarize documents that are already signed.

Hi NoandJo. Does that mean I can notarize the documents in the US Embassy?

Reba, there have been lots of cases in USEM where the CO refused documents that have not been notarized. Moreover, since my husband just started his job a few weeks ago and since he was "NO FILE" for 2007, the CO will likely require his notarized letter of employment and paystub. NoandJO, did you husband have his paystub notarized as well?

A lot of people have been saying that having a document notarized is free! I wonder where could that be.

You've already been told where but it won't be in the PI. There is only one document that needs notarizing and that's the I-134. This involves the USC signing the document in the presense of the notary. A foreigner cannot get documents notarized at USEM and doesn't need to. Once a document is signed it's too late to notarize it, so you can't possibly have a document sent to you in the PI and then notarized.

All a notary does is witness a signature and attest to the identity of the signer.

We called the visa information line a the DOS since my son did not file taxes for 2007. The gentleman sounded well informed, and said that since he didn't file, he needed to write a letter explaining why and have it notarized: that is, signed in front of a notary who is authorized by the US Government.

Outside the US, the embassy and US military bases are the only place such notaries are authorized.

My son also included supporting documentation to back up what he wrote. Pay stubs and employment letters don't need to be notarized.

How does one notarize a pay stub? That makes no sense to get it notarized. As Pushbrk stated, a notary public is basically verifying that the person who signed the document (which has to be done in from of the notary) is in fact who they say the are...but them providing identification. If your husband has already sent you the employment letter from his company it is more than likely signed already...and thus too late to get notarized.

A notary can attest to something being a true copy as well, if they've inspected the original but there's usually no actual need for that in the immigration process. I'd also agree with notarizing a letter about why one didn't file taxes but that's not an issue in this or most cases.

Hello Daisy! All my important documents has been notarized in the states and its free, not like here in USEM we have to pay notary $10 per documents..my husband paystubs, COE, bank statement has been notarized except for I-134 but i will gave it back to my husband in order to notarized his I-134 back in the states to make sure everything's ok during my interview soon...for federal Income Tax Return no need to notarized, CO accept recent FITR (Form 1040), photocopies of Income tax return is ok...even the form signed already you can still notarized,,,,

Thanks Pushbrk. I think that that varies from state to state though. For example Michigan does not allow a notary to do that...http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-13760-27058--F,00.html
