You know what I love about America? I love that if a woman choses to be conservative, we know she does it because she wants to. No one is making her be that way. You can't say that about most middle eastern countries. Many women are conservative there only because the law or their families force them to. If its not in your heart, it doesn't really count.

What's great about America is you can spend years teaching your children to be modest and righteous and all they have to do is walk at the door and into their school to unlearn everything you've taught them because no one holds the other ppl around them accountable for their immodesty like they do in conservative muslim countries.

The problem is, sis, that conservative Muslim countries don't guide with beautiful words, as the Prophet directed. They do it with shame and force, disregarding the notion that Allah is the final Judge. There is a problem with honor in the ME, in particular, in that the honor of men is define by the behavior of women. Any man who is perceived to be not in comtrol of "his" women loses face and he must act decisively to regain face. That leads to acts that are clearly misguided and unIslamic.

VW that makes alot of sense to me! Men need to get over their honor based on the behaviour of women... and their honor needs to be turned into humility and honoring GOD!

The treatment of women in Muslim tribal socities goes back farther than the time of the Prophet. It is antithetical to Islam, yet presented as if it defines Islam. It is unfortunate that those who understand this are so eaily labeled "liberal" or "westernized". Islam is universal, not tribal, not Arab, not a faith for the extreme. It is the Middle Way and we honor Allah by pursuing justice and mercy in all we do.

The opening verse of Al-Nisa, the surah where the directives concerning multiple marriage can be found is one of the most beautiful re the subject:

O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women;- reverence God, through whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (That bore you): for God ever watches over you.

This is not the command of a God who allows men to collect women at their pleasure or to kill them to restore their honor. Don't let anyone convince you that He does.

I would like to remind those who have forgotten that honor killings were the law in the US until the 1970s. A man could kill his wife for having an affair with no penalty (altho the reverse was not allowed). A men could rape his wife and there was no crime in that. That was struck down in a shocking court verdict. Women in the US were routinely considered to be an appendage of their husbands until the early 1970s, unable to obtain credit, own property, or work in many jobs. They could be fired for getting married or pregnant. This was during my lifetime.
