They just sent me a letter saying that owe them 1600.00 for child tax credit because as of January 2007 I was no longer a citizen.

UM I LEFT IN SEPTEMBER 2007!

Don't think that you're going to weasle money that I was entitled to before then.

I basically called pissed off and said: "Maybe you're just bitter that I left Canada, but I have documents proving I was a citizen until September 2007!"

I can't wait for their call back on Monday. I'm PISSED.

Oh lord Sprailenes. I discovered that Revenue Canada, after being advised in mid-June that I was leaving, still deposited the July CTB in my account. I'm going to have my sister take the money out and return it to them with a letter. The person I spoke to told me everything had been stopped.....d'uh guess not.

If you have problems getting them to respond, contact the office of your former MP and ask for their assistance. They should be able to get the problem corrected for you.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I found out the other day from my accountant how dumb CCRA really is. Another one of his clients had some "officer" show up at his house demanding $150K for outstanding GST. Turns out it was an 'error' where someone at CRA just added a couple of zeros to the correct amount!

Our teeny timeline:

Jan 23 '08 ~ met online

Mar '08 ~ 1st visit to Vancouver

May '08 ~ 2nd visit to Vancouver

Jun 08 ~ plans to move to the west coast!

Aug 8 08 ~ he moves to Bellingham

current ~ many trips back and forth across the border...

To speak in CRA's defense, they also have some very good, conscientious, knowledgeable and hardworking individuals working for them and I was fortunate enough to work with some of them fairly closely. By the same token they also have some jerks and unfortunately I would encounter one of them every now and then as well. It was a very satisfying feeling when I could go over their heads to the next level when they insisted on not listening or not doing what they were supposed to do, and get the confirmation, yes, the information I provided did prove they had made a mistake and they would correct it. Jerks seem able to infiltrate every strata of government and it is often they who give public service a bad name. Most public servants are dedicated, hard-working, conscientious and more than earn their pay-cheques.

One of the biggest problems is that the pay scale is the same across the country, so what is an appropriate salary for the position in some cities is not enough to support a family on in other cities. Subsequently places like Toronto have a very high turnover so not much chance of having employees that have been on the job long enough to know whats what. Unfortunately that's often where the call centers are located

  • 7/7/08 -- I-129f sent
  • 7/9/08 -- I-129f received at CSC

  • 12/22/08 -- packet 3 (with packet 4 attachment instead of checklist :P)
  • 12/29/08 -- packet 3 sent back with bits and pieces that I pulled together to make up a packet 3
  • 1/5/09 -- actual packet 3 received, but found out by via e-mail that they were satisfied with what I had already provided
  • 2/10/09 -- found out via call to DoS that my interview is scheduled!
  • 3/16/09 -- interview!!!! APROVED!!!
  • 4/7/09 -- MOVE!!!!!!!!

You still are a Canadian citizen, just not resident. You don't lose your citizenship just by moving to another country.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Yes I realized the terminology I used was incorrect well after it was posted.

:P Just got back from some errands and discovered that I have a letter from - who else - Revenue Canada. They are informing me of my CCTB payment for the next year. D'uh - I called on the 19th or 20th of June to tell them I was moving to the US and to stop the payments. Guy on the phone said they did, but obviously he forgot something.

I'll call them collect on Monday and have them stop any further payments. I hope

Is RevCan always this disorganized on the phone??? I just called them to give them my name/address change, and request the last copy of my NOA since I have been in the US and never got it.... so that I can file an exit tax return. First number I called - the one listed on their website for address changes - said that I have to call a different number. Lady at second number, whom I could barely understand, said:

1) I have to MAIL in a name change request along with the marriage certificate (this is contrary to what the RevCan website says)

2) Once the name is changed, I have to CALL back again to change the address..... apparently the same person cannot change the name and address..... too complicated, I guess

3) Once the name and address are changed, I can CALL and request a copy of the NOA

Oh..... and she added "I couldn't help you anyway....... our systems are down. You'll have to call another time."

I'm getting the impression that dealing with RevCan is going to be more fun than the ol' barrel of monkeys :bonk:

And raises are based on attendance. If you have been there for X days you will automatically get the same raise as everyone else no matter how good/bad you are. Promotions are always a pain in the neck. Your have to go through a lenthy process called competencies (which requires essay/exams/interviews and alot of jumping through hoops). So...the good people leave because they get sick of waiting and the others stay.
