Hi there,

My hubby Kyle says ...

"I've always been a fan of 'Claymores' in the trees myself" - He's ex-army and verrrrry pissed off about all the BS that's going on right now, specially since we did the right thing, paying through the nose and jumping through all the hoops for months on end to get me here.

Mind you, if Bush gets his way, we'll all be entitled to a refund ... won't we ... ? Yeah right ...

All the best,

Sheila

ask your hubby if he thinks a few beehive rounds might stop the line crossers

if he does, he has my vote for president.

OK, here's a proposal:

1) The border is opened. Yes, opened. Mexicans are free to cross at will and seek employment.

2) A serious crackdown on businesses offering under-the-table jobs. Make no mistake: Americans take these jobs too. Only in their case it's enterprising, not morally repugnant.

3) Mexicans may take jobs in the US, at minimum wage and whilst paying taxes.

4) Employers no longer have an incentive to offer jobs to illegals over Americans.

5) Given this, more of the jobs currently done by illegals will be done by Americans, since competition will drive up the wage.

6) The incentive to cross the border will reduce.

7) Fewer Mexicans cross the border

Assuming the contention of the Right is correct (that Americans would do these jobs if paid fairly, but are undercut by illegals who don't have to worry about the niceties of taxes and so on) it should work. As an added benefit, the money saved in border security could be put to use in other ways, like invading sovereign states or detaining people without trial in Cuba.

So we'd all be happy - well, except for the invaded sovereign states and the prisoners detained without trial, but who cares about them?

The initial mystery that attends any journey is: how did the traveller reach his starting point in the first place?

Finally, a proposal that would have poll numbers below that of the job approval ratings of the President.

Oh, I'd imagine so. So can you tell me what's wrong with it?

Here's why it occurred to me: after Poland (and 9 other nations) joined the EU a year or two ago, there was a huge fear that the UK would be flooded with Poles. You know the kind of thing - they'll be claiming welfare, they just want to sponge off the honest, hard-working British taxpayer, all the usual ###### that gets talked about immigrants.

Well, it didn't happen.

But if it really is true that Americans would do the jobs that illegals do if they're paid properly, then bring it on. Bring on that free market competition. Let's see what Americans are really made of. And note step 2) as I suggested - law enforcement should focus on any employer who employs anyone, of any nationality under the table.

Antone,

I see what you're saying and appreciate the point you're trying to make. My first problem, as you might have already guessed, is with your assumption that law enforcement will be able and willing to effectively prosecute employers who break the law. It's not a very good assumption, IMO, because it will not happen in the foreseeable future.

But for the sake of argument, let's assume that can happen. My next objection to the proposal is on grounds of reciprocity. Would the Mexican labor market as open to American workers? I'd be on board a deal with that is fair to US workers. That would mean workers in both countries can freely move across the border and seek work or even start businesses. It would also mean harmonization across both countries of the minimum wage and workplace safety standards. If all that happens, I don't see a problem with it.

Of course, all that won't happen because Mexico has absolutely no reason to abandon its comparative advantage by succumbing to all the strangulatory regulations that are in place in the US. And on the US side, it would be a hard sell to the electorate to voluntarily give up regulations that have benefited generations of middle-class Americans, all for the sake of free trade.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
