im tryin to install windows xp over linux and i have the xp cd and everything but at some point of the install it asks me for a filecalled "asms" does anyone know what that is??? i never nedded it before and i cant install the xp without it...it says its supposed to be on the cd but apparently its not!!

please help

Since windows doesnt recongnize linux partition, you will need from the Linux install cd, to format to a filesystem that windows utilze.. FAT,FAT32... or simply RAW and then put in the windows CD and install windows...

regarding your error... this is all I found on the ms site.. Is the disc scratched?

i formatted the partition that linux was on and it says its in NTSC raw formated

do i really needthe linux cd?? cause i dont have it (

if nobody knows the answer to my question, maybe you know this one....are sony vaio with vista and Hp T45 ( the printer) compatible?? if yes, how can i hook the printer to the laptop??

Well think you do ... read this. But I could be wrong as I've not done it myself.

Your file error is something completely different... more like it's not seeing it from the cd. If you can get that far with the install you might be good to go. If you can, search the cd for the file and if you find it copy it over to your hard drive to browse for later when installing. You might be able to do it that way.

You need a full version of the XP install disc. Not an 'upgrade' disc. (Although, I believe if you call MS they will walk you through getting it on there. )

You need to go to HP's website to find a vista driver to make your printer work with your laptop. Click on 'support' then on drivers and/or software and find the vista driver for your machine. If you can not find the vista specific driver then just type vista in the search box on the site and it's sure to bring you more information regarding vista compatibility.

fyi.. vista comes with some drivers that might work with your printer. plug it in first and see if the wizard finds the driver and makes it work. It it can not it will ask you if you want to go online to find the driver and it will search for you.

i wasnt worried about the driver i cant plug it in the laptop thats the problem....on the vaio i have only usb plugs and the ones that look like when you plug your home phone.....

Sorry don't hear of too many people using a parallel connections these days. You will need a parallel to usb adapter to connect it. Probably should make sure it's vista compatible first. Even if the manufacturer's website says it is, i'd do a google search and read from other owners before investing any money into getting it to connect. I have an HP that is very touchy with vista although apparently... it's 'suppose' to work.

somebody shoot me i just want my printer to work, if not with the xp laptop, then the vaio...is that too much to ask??

i already have that cable, the problem is that its not compatible to the vaio...

Yes, I know you have that cable ....and that is why it's not compatible with the laptop. Older printers tend to connect that way. Newer ones will connect with USB. Therefore..... you need a parellel to USB adapter to make your parellel printer plug into the usb port. However, you want to make sure you can use it with Vista first.

i think ill go to best buy to get a new printer.

does any one have any suggestions for a good printer/scanner ??
