I was in Lvov in February and enjoy it very much. The old city is very beautiful with beautiful churches. There was a little North America Native American museum, which I found interesting and unexpected.

I was in Crimea in July and stayed in Myrnyi, a little city north of Yevpotoriya. Beautiful beaches and beautiful sea and prefect weather!!!

I want to visit the Carpathian mountains some time, my fiancee say it is very beautiful!

Def. do that, especially if you guys like coffee... They have so many quite coffee shops and the whole city is just so European... There is a lot to see there if you are into history and architecture, too :)

We'll be going to Lviv in September and since it is one of my fav. places, I just can't wait. It's just something special in the air in that place, if you know what I mean...

I do understand

I would love to visit Lvov/Lviv some time soon. Last year in Kyiv we had a family reunion so not much time for travel. I met my wife's father and brother for the first time. Both said I have to learn to speak Russian. I've been concentrating on improving Lena's English so much that I lost my motivation to learn Russian. But, with so many of our new friends here speaking Russian, it would probably help me a lot.

My wife says that western Ukraine is just so beautiful and rustic (my word) that I really need to visit that part of the country. My only exposure to Lviv was from an airplane window at the airport and it was raining. I didn't see much. I am beginning to think that the Carpathian mountains are a myth. Every time I've flown into Ukraine the mountains have been covered by clouds so I have yet to see even one mountain.

I'm told the mountains are real as my wife has photos to show me. Just looks like a stream with trees to me.

Maybe next year, if we can afford it.

It is awesome. Try the Romanian Carpathians if you really want something different. Sibiu is great, and Brasov is cool.

I lived in Odessa for two years, so it is a favorite of mine. I have friends there and I like that city. I voted for Donetsk. It is my fiancees home city and her mother is there, so it will be our number one destination I am sure and she does not like Odessa (too many tourists and too expensive and she does not like that everyone expects tips as they are "spoiled" by tourists) but you can't beat the Opera house (which was under construction when I lived there but we went to last November...beautiful) and the sea is nice and many nice parks.

I also like Kharkov (fantastic architecture), Kiev. Downtown Kiev on a hot summer Saturday evening is a sight to behold!

Odessa has changed a lot. Even back in 2000 it wasn't as crowded and touristy as it is today. IMHO, all those "aquarium" looking cafes on Derabasovs'ka really spoiled the feel of Odessa's center.

Thanks to all of you who responded. I have never been to Kiev, but will make that happen soon. I am surprised that no one voted for it. Next month I will be visiting Odessa again, and spending time in Kherson with Vika's family. They are all determined to get me out on the Dneiper for an excursion of some sort.

I'm surprised that no one voted for Kyiv either. Probably because so many have already been there. I love Kyiv on a late spring or summer evening. Downtown by Independence Square is great with the streets closed off on weekends. You can sit , listen to live music, drink tea or beer in a sidewalk cafe and just enjoy the people. The underground mall is close and so is the Metro. The city is so rich in culture and history with great ornate buildings, wide streets and sidewalks. My biggest complaint of Independence Square is the McDonalds sign at one end. Leave it to good old American commercialism to take away from a truly beautiful setting.

I wish my town had just a few restaurants of the quality found everywhere in Kyiv. You can sit in a sidewalk setting and enjoy a quiet meal because the cars are parked and no one is constantly driving around. One evening they set of fireworks while we had just sat down at a restaurant. The fireworks were so loud they set off car alarms. I laughed so hard.

Sounds great. I am really looking forward to it. How much time have you spent there?

We were in Kyiv for 3 weeks last year, I spent two weeks with my fiancee, now wife in 2005 and I was in Kyiv for 5 days in 2003 when we met. I'm looking forward to exploring more areas of Ukraine in the future. Of course, my wife would rather travel to places in Europe that she's never been to. That's okay with me, since I haven't been to many places there either.

Now, if I can just come up with the time and money at the same time.

That's the trick, no doubt. In Ukraine, try Lviv. We loved it. Most Ukrainians seem to like it too.

Three weeks in Kiev? What all did you do? I am making a list, as we plan to spend a couple of weeks around Vika's interview.
