I am personally not a fan of the army and would not join the army for the simple fact that they don`t get a say what they fight for. Wars of aggression etc. That is a personal view i hold and maybe it makes me biased towards those serving in the army.

the military is there to preserve democracy, not practice it......

Now if that were true i might have a different view of the military however it has been seen to do nothing of the sort. Sorry.

I have been trying to stop myself from jumping into this-and I can't....

First as for you not buying that some people join the military ( I was in the USAF) for college--I DID!

I am not a natural fighter or a violent person! I am 5'8 125 pounds.

I joined initially to go to college to become what I am now-a meteorologist......Not all missions are ones of aggression, either.

Ask me-I spent 7 months in Operation Joint Guard in Bosnia--helping to keep the peace between 3 groups of people who really just wanted to fight until they irradicated eachother! It was heartbreaking to see all the injured children ( landmines) getting treatment in the MASH ( AMERICAN Military) hospital I was assigned to just outside of Tuzla. I was always getting called at all hours to give flight briefings to the MEDVAC pilots for landmine casualties ( most of them civilian, mind you).

Believe me-being in the military did NOT give me a love of war at all! However I realized that although we may "not have a say in what wars we fight" as individual servicemen and women-we do come from a nation that DOES commit some of the considerable resources/manpower to other causes other than war....You know that's true. World catastrophes-there are always some American servicemen and women there to help!

Please do not generalize that all military people are violent or only there because they want to kill something...Not YOUR words, I know, but lost the quote; you know what I mean.

You may not respect our government-that's your perogative-but please do not disrespect our servicemen and women or the sacrifices they have made either on the battlefield, or in humanitarian missions.

It insults me personally; for reasons I do not wish to post in public, however feel free to PM.

With that I want to say, I have read your comments on 9/11 with great interest....You do present some good points! Food for thought.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Well once again i feel i need to make it clear that i did not mean to sound as though i felt all soldiers were like that. I have not served in the army and would not serve in the army. That is a personal choice and although it would give me a new insight and i would i am sure learn new things about myself the world and enable me to meet new people i would not do it personally.

I didn`t mean that i did not buy that people join to go to college. I meant i didn`t feel it was a necesary reason to join up. I feel there are other ways if college is what you are after. Having said that i also said (i think) that i do not hae the views i expressed towards all soldiers. I understand the military is a broad group of people but i also see that a lot(to clarify i mean a large number not a majority or all) are indeed of below average intellect and often seem to be of a violent disposition and like i said that comes with the job and the training for the job.

Naturally i commend humanitarian projects undertaken by armies but those projects can also be carried out by other groups aswell. I am not criticising the army as a whole just the aspect of it that i do not agree with. Sorry if that offends anybody and let me make it clear that i am not taking anything away from anybody or spitting on anybody or name calling anybody. If you are a soldier and are cool then i will treat you with the appropriate respect. I am not starting wars with soldiers because after all they have weapons.

So sorry to insult you as it was nto my intention.

It is not going to do this thread any good. Plus you have failed to speak to me with respect so debate with you is clearly pointless. Ii would rather not spend this thread debating the point.

You're just murking up the waters because you've been called to task to stand behind your opinion....which you said you could prove. But now you can't

You're not fooling anyone, you know.

I am a graduate of the US Naval Nuclear Power program. A Navy trained nuclear operator. I seriosly doubt that you could complete the program. Do a google search.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

We are not playing chess. An opinion does not require "proof" and it is not my repsonsiblity to persuade you to adopt my opinion. If you showed genuine interest in listening to me i would gladly sit here and trawl through google to find articles and video from the media which provide basis for my opinions. However you are not listening to me so i doubt you would actually read or view anything i posted. You are just waiting for another chance to call me names. Very childish i think and certainly not chess.

yabasta,

you have used "a lot" many times in this thread, and it has been pointed out to you many times as well, that "a lot" does in fact mean quite a bit, not a small amount. You yourself even said by "a lot" you mean a large number. Referring to a large number of people in the military as you have, is still generalizing a whole lot, especially when you don't have proof to back it up. "A large number" could very well mean a majority too.

I'm pretty sure in the military they could easily distinguish what "a lot" means, yet you are trying to say it doesn't mean a majority, but a large number. Hmm...???? Either admit you don't have proof to support your statistics, or that you are not sure how many fit your generalization, or admit that you are just saying it because you are anti-war and anti-military and just want to insult them...but please stop saying "a lot."
