I know some people preparing for their interview gathered IRS transcripts and copies of their 1040s. We are wondering why both would be needed since they're the same. Anyone can shed some light on this?

My interview will be in Montreal.

Ohh...good question! Our K1 petition was just received at the NVC yesterday and then it's on to Vancouver. I've been wondering the same thing. :)

See my timeline for my K-1 and AOS/EAD/AP details.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the question. If you filed a K1 petition you aren't married, therefore you wouldn't have filed previous joint tax returns. If you mean that you already sent them in with your application, they might not have them on hand at the interview and that is why they want you to bring copies. One thing about any immigration process is that you always have to have multiple copies on hand. Once you get here to the US and file AOS, you are going to have a bazillion copies of that stuff too. They like to say, "show me this" at the interview even if you already sent it in.

If your question meant something entirely different from what I gathered, I apologize!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I'm reading the OP's question as - Why do we have to produce both the 1040 with slips AND a transcript from the IRS.

In answer, you don't - it's one or the other - not both - that is required.

That's what I thought the OP's question was, too. If this process has taught me anything it's that the US government enjoys being tedious and redundant for the sake of tediousness and redundancy, so requiring both wouldn't have surprised me. :) Thank you for clarifying!

Oh I see now. I was totally unclear of what the OP meant. Could have been taken so many ways!

Thanks everyone for clearing this up. My fiance has already made copies of his income tax returns and is going to order the transcripts tomorrow. Guess I'll just let him do it since the transcripts are free and I'll just have more proofs to back things up ^_^
