Social Security...ARGH!!!

OK, so Glyn and I have been here for over three weeks now. No social security card although we checked on the visa form that we wanted one. So, I call Social Security today like it says to. After 15 minutes of trying to reach a human the man says...I cannot help you and says you need to contact the DOS. Ummm, ok. So I look online at the SS website and it too says to call Social Security if you do not receive your card in three weeks. So, I call back again and speak to a woman who then tells me...you have to come in we don't send them out automatically. Oh, I said, but that isn't what the paperwork or your web site says.

I am really frustrated now. I don't have time to go down to SS on Monday and wait there in line, which is why we checked the box to have one sent automatically. I wish they all would get their act together and figure out what is what. With so many different branches of the government, I don't think any one knows what the other is doing.

OK...rant over.

I checked the box also, but i never received my SS card by mail, and i never read on the net that somebody received it by mail after checking the box. Sorry.

I need to go with some forms, after 10 days after arriving in USA and i learned that you have a delay to respect before the expiration of your I-94.

Good luck

You have got company my dear! I also checked the yes on my visa application but was here for over three weeks and heard nothing. Hubby took me to SS office to apply and they told me that I was not even in the system, and that they had no correspondence from immigration. I was furious because I have to do the NCLEX exam and my driving. Anyway, this lady who did my application told that I will get it in the mail in two weeks. I was contacted by SS the very week I was expecting the card. They advised me that immigration has stopped my application because my D.O.B was wrong :crying: SS had the correct D.O.B. I received the green card with a typo (my D.O.B) and when I contacted uscis they advised me to send it back with form I-90, which I did long before I applied for a SSC. They don't work together or share information.:angry::angry:

Everytime I call uscis to query why they cannot correct the mistake they just read from a script! Now I am here without a SSN,therefore stucked at home all day doing nothing

Well, we went down to the SS office on this past Monday. We didn't really have much choice as the people on the phone wouldn't help AT ALL. We got a really nice woman and we got the same story. Nothing had been put onto the system for Glyn at all. Nothing nil nada. So she re-applied right then and there with his visa/passport as id. She told us the card will take a week to ten days but to come back the next day and she could give him the number. It is so annoying after all the money you spend to get here and then you can't do anything once you get here. I told Glyn he could have come in illegaly and gotten a job faster and it would have saved us a TON of money.

Thanks for the Info.

Government agency don't expect too much from them. They even have problems working with themselves, imagine how could they do it with eachother.

Same happened to us. Did as instructed and requested a social security card be mailed on our DS-230 form. Double-checked the SS website to confirm, yes, indeed, after three weeks the card should automatically be mailed. BUT NOOOOOO!!!! It didn't. Go to the local social security office and got the same story as you. Seems the social security administration is a big mess.

But we got the card finally.
