Been to dozens of interviews, applied for over 100 jobs and not one bite at the cherry !!

If you're inviting them to "bite your cherry", that could be part of the problem.....

Hmmm! I think you mis-read ..... I'm not getting a bite at the cherry -- meaning I am not getting the chance to shine.

I read that right the first time Ian & Anne! You will get your chance to shine..I'm just not looking forward to experiencing the same thing when I get there!! I expect it though.. I'm rootin for ya, something will turn up. Keep positive mate.

Cheers -x-

Good luck with the job hunt! When I was looking for my first job I too didn't get anything. I had actually had only 2 interviews the first was interested mainly in my status and didn't understand what an EAD was.. the second was more interested in what I could do and less interested in my status as the hiring manager had lived in Europe for quite some time and understood many, many non American things thank god!

I had my wife Americanize my CV from back home and turn it into a resume from the start. We did mention on my resume/CV that I (at the time) held a valid EAD and could work for any employer. We later changed that to reflect I-551 status as the majority of the information on my resume/CV is from back home and wanted to provide some reassurance to any potential employer that I was properly documented.

I too have been looking for other employment and haven't found much out there. I might just have to sit tight where I'm at until things get better in the economy.

Good Luck! :)

I never realized how hard it is to be an immigrant in the U.S. - even if you're legal. My husband was lucky in the beginning and would get any job, but ones where he couldn't practice his English and/or was working with illegals who were treated badly by their employers (so my hubby was treated the same way).

His current job started out nice until we realized what an a$$hole his boss is. And now with the economy getting worse, his job is affected by this and he's working part time hours. He's not happy. With my help, my husband must have sent out his resume and/or applied for over 50 jobs over the last few months. He had some leads but very few.

He finally found a job through a staffing agency. This is an opportunity he didn't have 7 months ago because his English was too limited - now he was able to do everything for himself. The best part about this new job is that he'll have BENEFITS.

Why don't you call your local staffing agency?

Took me 12-13 weeks to get a job. Thought I was going to go crazy in the house all cooped up and spending 8-9 hrs a day searching for a job. If you can go directly to an employer's website and apply from there do it! Bypass all the agencies that will find a job for you - unless you want to start off as a temp. I don't know what your line of work was, but I can't tell you that admin positions, decent ones are there - you just need to look - local universities, local government, lawyer's offices...

After I accepted my job offer, 3 more came rolling in that I would've liked to pursue but the timing was off. I'm very happy with the current job as it has lots of hands-on and on-line training, benefits, people I work for are great and welcoming.

Hope you find something real soon!

How did the interview go? If I can offer any assistance at all, in getting you prepared for your job search, or steering you in the right direction, please feel free to let me know.

I do recruiting for several large companies in the Midwest, and have contacts with some on the East Coast.

Good Luck!!!

That is an excellent idea. I took a job at a staffing agency as a temp filling in for a lady on maternity leave and ended up getting hired on full time. It's especially good if, like me you tend not to be stellar in interviews but you can prove by your actions that you can perform.

Good luck on your interview!

The thing that gets me about the whole applying for jobs thing is that you never hear anything from them.... well rarely anyway. I've applied for hundreds of jobs, been doing it since February, so 5 months. I've been volunteering since April, just to get some Stateside experience on my resume. I found a freelance temp job that I'm working 12 hours a week at now, which might end up with a full time job but is looking doubtful..... so I'm still applying for jobs and most of them I never hear back from. I've had maybe 6 interviews in 5 months.

All the jobs I'm applying for are BS too.... I considered taking my degree off my resume to apply for some of them because they only required high school education, but I'm proud of my degree. Shame though, right now I feel like I worked my ### off for 4 years for a degree and sometimes it seems like it was a waste of time. A monkey could do my job.

I'm finding the same thing, but especially with the rate of pay. Ten years ago, I was making $16/hr as a payroll administrator in Canada. A few weeks back, I was called by an agency here in NC for an accounting assistant position. She asked me what my minimum acceptable pay rate would be, and I said (swallowing my pride) $10 - $12/hr. She said "Oh.... we don't get many positions that pay that well." Talk about taking one giant step backwards. Oh well, whatcha gonna do??!

My advisor when I was at university was from Scotland, and we got into this discussion one day (as I voiced to him my concerns at the time with Nicky finding a job). He said that even with a Master's degree he had a difficult time getting a job at first...the only job he could get was as a cashier in the bursar's office. However, his talents were quickly recognized and he soon became an undergraduate advisor.

It seems that until you have some work experience in the US it is harder to get better paying jobs...unfortunatly some employers probably see that you are foreign and might be concerned that you will leave the job to move back to your home country after a year or two. Once you have shown that you have worked in the US for some time they feel more comfortable due to showing you have lived here for a while and seem to intend on continuing to live here.

So basically, you might have to start out making less than what your experience or education allows. But there is always the possibility of moving up, and it is a lot easier progress your career that way than it is by applying as an outsider.
