Life here is fine ..... but .....

OK, so here we are in the 'Land of Oppertunity' .... or so I thought ....

Been to dozens of interviews, applied for over 100 jobs and not one bite at the cherry !!

Week later or less the jobs that I have applied for / been to an interview for are reposted. :protest:

Just don't get all this. What is it with employers here, they post jobs week after week and never seem to fill them, seems they just want to waste their money and other peoples time.

Screeming for a job and no employer is taking note etc, how frustrating.

Anyone else been having trouble ?

I just feel like putting this whole job hunting thing on the back burner now (full time job on it's own).

Your first job in the US is the hardest. Many will have in the back of their minds that you may not speak the language correctly that you don't understand how things are done , all sorts of worries. To an employer it is cheaper to run an ad for manyh weeks than to hire an employee that doesn't fit and disrupts the whole place. What type of work are you looking for ?

Not just that but from what I hear, jobs are notoriously difficult to get at the moment anyway because of the crazy economy - I can't say I am looking forward to hunting myself... I think it also depends on the State/where you live as well - not that that helps any. It really sucks but keep trying - think of it as if they are such morons to not think you are awesome and keep advertising then do you really want to work for them anyway?

I so relate to your concerns!

I have had my EAD since December 07 and my resume was certainly getting me to interview stage ( ditched the traditional CV that we are so use to in the UK).

My role in the UK was that of a complaints management advisor - I would deal with angry irate customers and find solutions etc - bascially day to day use of tolerance, understanding, excellent customer service skills along with the ability to explain and maintain bad news messages. I also use to cover for holiday relief when managers would be away - as well as be part of a coaching team - a fairly well rounded customer services advisor.

However getting a job here has been very difficult - they clearly they like the resume ( getting the interviews) but my friend ( who is a manager and deals with hiring etc) suggested to me that perhaps my interviewing technique was a tad too formal for the interviewers tastes.... I live in a small town in WA where everybody knows everybody, and apparently this could be working against me. So many different elements to consider.

I have stopped my jobhunt right now as it looks like we are moving to Alaska - husband has a job offer there.

Keep plugging away - persistance pays ! The very best wishes to you. :D

This might sound stupid but how does a resume differ in style to a CV? My CV needed a ton of work and is pretty rammed but my OH says I have to try and get it all on one page...

If you're inviting them to "bite your cherry", that could be part of the problem.....

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

British style CVs seem to encompass everything you have done since GCSEs (or O-Levels, for the olds). US resumes tend to be more focused on your current employment and the skills and are one page. Depending on your level of experience, I would not include secondary education results, which almost all British cvs do. Also, people in Britain put a lot more personal information on their CVs (marital status, age, hobbies etc) that is generally not done here.

I lost my job of 7 years just about 3 years ago. It took me a good 6 months of wasting time on countless mailings, phone calls, and interviews to find a good fit.

My husband, as a new immigrant, took just 3 months to find a job.

I think it depends on your field, the city you are looking in, and the proper alignment of all the stars and planets!

Face it, it's a ####### shoot whenever you are looking.

I hope something falls into your lap soon.

I was trying to help a Venezuelan friend with her CV. She had SO MUCH information on it (although it was still one page). I suggested to her that she cut out at least 1/2 of it and save that for the interview stage. I gave her a copy of mine...

I’ve been job-hunting for about a month and I’m getting fed up with it too, there just doesn’t seem to be anything out there. I’ve decided to give it up for a while and do some freelance work from home that I was doing back in the UK. The pay isn’t the greatest, but the commute’s a charm. :D

My first job was pretty easy to get, then I moved on to a Office position what I thought was going to be a great place. It was a great job ( worked there for 2 yrs, but they got rid of my boss and got this other guy who hated me & I hated him. I knew it wasn't gonna work out and thought about looking for work. Then one day I had a confrontation with this guy and quit right on the spot.

It's been 3 months now, been to tons of interviews but nothing so far.

I'm even applying for things that I would consider "beneath me" back home. The pay here is pathetic, less then half of what I was paid at home and most don't offer benefits.

Just another reason to add why I hate this place and wish I had never came!

This is the land of opportunity, unless you come from where Lily above came from. But you have to keep in mind that there's a ton of people looking for work everyday, especially now with all the lay offs that have been going on all over the country. I was laid off from my job back in 2005 and I considered looking for work as for time job. I was on the computer, job sites and interviews for more than 8 hours a day and found my first job within 2 months, then found another one a month after that, until I found the one I'm at. It takes patience and lots of perseverence.

Hmmm! I think you mis-read ..... I'm not getting a bite at the cherry -- meaning I am not getting the chance to shine.
