"Should You Get Married?"

by Kimberly Snider

"Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral" (Hebrews 13:4).

Whenever I am asked to speak to singles' groups the two favorite questions are: Should I get married? To whom?

To the first question, "Should I get married?" I say this: "It is your choice. The Bible clearly leaves that decision up to you. God will bless you if you marry; He will bless you if you don't. He lets each individual choose for him or herself."

To the second question, "Whom should I marry?" I say this: "It is your choice within two boundaries."

The first boundary is that the person you choose to marry must be single. There is no gray area here. If the person is married, it is absolutely forbidden by God for you to even consider a relationship with a married person. You cannot.

The second boundary is that the person you marry must be a follower of Christ. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?" There is no use asking God to make an exception. His word is clear.

Being a Christian means trusting that the way God asks us to live is the best way. It means doing what He says to do. In John 14:15 Jesus says, "If you love me, you will obey what I command."
