Would you say this to your boss?

"I'd like to train someone on what I do. I realize there's a training freeze but it is important to me that someone get trained on my skillset, and I'd be willing to provide that training myself if necessary. I'm ready to move on, either here or at another company, but before I do it I'd like to know my customers will have the support they need after I do."

All you are doing by saying this is confirming you feel ready for more responsibility, but you recognise it is important for the company that the dept and customers do not suffer as a result. Therefore you are prepared to invest your time in training someone else to offer the same level of service as you have, it also demonstrates confidence in your own abilities and that you are not insecure.

I was a Human Resources & Office Manager for a big manufacturing company in the UK, I positively encouraged this kind of attitude in employees. They benefitted, the company benefitted....even if they were not ultimatley promoted or they left, at least the company had it's bases covered, even to cover for sickness for instance. I was responsible for all recruitment decisions and this kind of attitude of passing on skills or mentoring was something I looked for alot.

My whole dept worked on this basis, the 6 of us all were able to cover for each other on the daily tasks without causung problems for our customers.

i think it is both responsible and professional...note>. i am in the human services field...and your corp. may have a different view on such matters.

it depends a lot on the environment and atmosphere of the work place, of course- as majority of my professional experience is in nonprofits, saying something like that would be encouraged and wouldn`t require a lot of self-pysch prep

in my last job I did say it

at the same time, in a more structured environment I suppose I would need to prepare myself more for saying it, just the whole -I can do this- mode

Naturalized! Yeah!

totally would have said it to my last boss(had him for several years) but I've had other bosses in the past...dunno really. I've never been afraid to tell my bosses what I think I guess..one of em used to call me 'chief' on 3rd shift.. , but I definitely don't think I would say it in those words at ALL...I'd have to be comfortable..and those exact words are way to formal for me..but if you meant THAT ...generally, then sure. I would definitley say this. Almost these exact words. In fact, I've been trying to prepare a little mini speech for the job I'm at now because I want to have a child and become a stay-at-home-mom within the next two years or so. My words would differ slightly, however, because we do not have "customers" in my line of work. The meaning would be the same though, as I'd simply be trying to get my point across that I care about the company and want the job done right when the time comes for me to leave and someone be appointed to take over my position.

I'd use the 'Mack truck' theory. Training someone to do your job makes smart business sense; if you are the only one who can do the work, and you get hit by a truck tomorrow, where does that leave your customers (and the business)?

That way you're making a strong case for the training as well as not showing your poker hand, so to speak, about possibly looking for another job.

They're very aware of the fact that if I were to drop dead right now, there would be no effective backup for my customers. Not without a lot of initial training, at least. My boss knows this. He can't do anything about it because there's a training freeze.

Oh and a hiring freeze too.

In that case, AS, it is probably best for you to offer to do the training yourself.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

My mind isn't made up yet. I may offer, or I may not. I'm still not sure if this employer is worth the courtesy. I do like my customers, though. Which is why I'm even thinking along these lines.
