I have flown with NWA/KLM a few times and was not impressed but if it is a short, direct flight there should be no problems. I remember the food was BAD but if it's only 3 hours they won't be feeding you anyway. Another time (flying from New Delhi they flew us into Newark instead of JFK and refused to give any kind of reimbursement for transportation - since I live in Queens and was really broke at the time it made a difference!!

I've flown twice by NWA:

  • Atlanta-Detroit in 1996 (rented a car @ DTW to go to Ayr, 268 km inside Canada)
  • WDC-Frisco (via Memphis), 2001. Exchange time for return flight was a tad tight
By Delta, lots of times, Calgary-Atlanta (via Salt Lake City).

For domestic (and Canada) flights, I have no issues about flying them--though I'm leery of using any US-based carrier for off-continent flights.

Interesting comment there - why the reservation about using U.S. carriers for off-continent flights? I can tell you from many years of trans-Atlantic tooing-and-froing, that the U.S. carriers are nearly always far, far cheaper than B.A. or Virgin Atlantic, and apart from United losing my luggage a couple of times (I always got it back within 48 hrs, but that's not the point), I've ha absolutely no issues at all.

I have flown NW a ton of times--living in Minneapolis (one of their hubs) it is hard not to.

I think they do a fine job. I've had no real problems with them, in fact, far less than with other carriers. Reasonable prices, decent service, and I don't think they've ever lost our luggage (knock on wood--we seem to lose it every time we go to Morocco, involving MULTIPLE airlines--AirCanada, BA, SunCountry, Royal Air Maroc).

I've never heard the Northworst moniker. People around here tend to like Northwest.

I flew exclusively with NWA for 4 years from Canada to the US via Minneapolis before my K-1. I rarely had any delays. Once I voluntarily got off a flight that was overbooked, and they gave me a free flight, $30.00 for meals that day ( I just took a later flight). I had enough reward flights for 2 free flights, and they never lost a piece of luggage. I'd say they did pretty good!

My experiences with US-based carriers (including "shared" aircraft"):
  • Dec 1999, ATL-LGW (as replacement for planned ATL-BRU flight, delayed without correcting onward connexions) Delta flight--one bag misplaced when transferring from LGW to LHR for onward connexion (corrected last-second prior to boarding of LGW-bound flight)
  • Jan 2000, returning from India through Brussels, Delta Aircraft "shared" by Sabena BRU-ATL--misplaced EXACT SAME BAG (Delta delivered it about a week later)
  • 2005 return flight (entirely Delta) MAA-JFK; came in late, I had to go to LGA to reconnect to get home--Delta said they would issue vouchers to taxi (which didn't arrive) but not for bus (which was waiting for passengers) JFK to LGA
Not exactly experiences I wish to duplicate.

As far as Air Canada--sorry, but I don't want any trips through Pearson (I did have an ok experience with them in 1985 using YYC-LHR, connecting to LHR-BOM flight--but I haven't lived in Calgary, or even Mountain/Pacific timezones since 1994)

I flew them a few times. Once from Detroit was a nightmare.....The toilet in first class overflowed and we had to go back to the gate. Something about no gate available and limited maintenance staff meant we sat on the runway for 3 hours. When they finally fixed the toilet, we had issues deicing. When we got to St. Louis, the door wouldn't open and we had to walk down the back steps. I vowed never to fly them again after that.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

This is good to read. I'm flying with them in a couple of weeks and have never used them before. London to Detroit then onto Elmira Corning Regional.

Yes, glad that garyandmarylou bought up this question too because I was wondering about this airline since I had also never used them before and it seem that they have the lowest fares compared to other airlines at the moment to where I want to travel this summer.

When i was looking for flight/hotel deals i was surprised that there wasnt a layover. They listed like 5 airlines and Northwest was the only one who was straight thru from Milwaukee to Las Vegas.

I'll definitely sign up for the frequent flyer miles too!
