I had been to the UK a few times before meeting Nicky, and just from my own interests in history and politics I knew more than the average joe about the country. But I've learned a great deal more since meeting Nicky. Almost every day something new comes up that I learn...whether it be a slang word or some historical fact.

I knew about General Germany from my German classes. I didn't know a whole bunch about the differences between regional German cultures and dialects though. I got schooled when I got there, let me tell you.

Who is General Germany?

Heh.

When you learn about a country, the knowledge is pretty shallow. You learn about it in a general sense, not what it really is, because that takes too much time. I mean, my husband had no idea about Indiana beyond it was in the US before he met me. He knew about the US in a general sense, General US. :P

Does watching US TV shows in the UK count? :D

I must admit, we did talk an awful lot about the differences between the USA and the UK, so I knew a little about the lifestyle there before I actually visited.

One silly thing I didn't realise though ... how hard it would be for some Americans to understand my Scottish accent!

I have no problems with understanding the american accent .. hmm those TV shows must have helped!

I study Hispanic Languages & Literature with a concentration on Latin American & Caribbean Studies. I knew a great deal about Peru, but there are some things that you can never learn from courses or professors or journal articles. I learned a lot just from going there and also from being with Luis. :star:

I do a lot of comparing and that helps me understand things. There are a lot of differences, but also similarities that I didn't even know existed. It's interesting stuff.
