An African problem? While there may be a greater concentration of people infected with HIV in Africa, it seems to be everyone's problem:

I think this is why he called it an African problem.

From the original article:

A two-decade ban on people with HIV visiting or immigrating to the United States may end soon through a Senate bill aimed at fighting AIDS and other diseases in Africa and other poor areas of the world.

Hmmm, yeah, I'm not sure what one ahs to do with the other though. How will lifting the ban help fight AIDS and other diseases in Africa?

He's wrong though isn't he.

In any case - we know full well that the US Govt has had various political and financial initiatives in place for many years to help curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa and elsewhere in the 3rd world.

Those with HIV seeking legal permanent residency would still have to demonstrate they have the resources to live in this country and would not become a "public charge."

That might be difficult, no?

Yes, but fair is fair.

Just because the immigrant's sponsor is able to show s/he makes a certain amount over the poverty line doesn't mean said sponsor will be able to afford health insurance or other coverage for illnesses. Medications alone for HIV or AIDS can be well over $1000 a month. Necessary lab tests can easily run $3-$5000 a year. That amount is often more than the sponsor is required to show that s/he makes. In many states, legal immigrants are eligible for Medicaid as soon as they get here. The result is that we're paying for health coverage for many medical problems (not just HIV) that they enter the country with. I certainly don't think we should discriminate against people with one particular disease, but I wonder if the sponsor should be able to prove they can purchase health insurance for the person they sponsor?

A representative of China wrote about getting beyond the knee jerks reactions... Hmmm... (((shrugs))) That indivdual must have been high on drugs. IMO we should maintain the ban. Personally, I don't want an influx of folks that can spread incurable diseases coming to our nation to visit or live. Hell, some folks have been delayed and/or denied receiving a visa because of TB. Yes… TB! Now, there is discussion of lifting the ban on folks with HIV/AIDS. Where do we draw the line. I've wrote it once and I'll write it again... "if you don't stand for something... you'll fall for anyting!" This ultra liberal mentality is going to destroy this nation. Mark my words...
