Sujeet makes pakoras with potatoes or cauliflower once in awhile, not so healthy but it's good.

that sounds good. we're not vegetarian so we put lamb keema in ours. its good both ways though.

I am not sure how I feel about lamb, but it sounds good. (had to look up keema!)

But I wish I was eating Chicken curry too! :(

lol my wife wants to buy a house next year.. i've suggested moving into an even more densely packed town than the one we're already in, just because it'll put me in walking distance of indian food... then i could be eating chicken curry every day!

That's kind of sad since you are Indian...you can't make it yourself? :hehe:

that's women's work! :P

:P

Question... those of you who have had babies recently and those of you trying to conceive... how did you make the determination that you cold afford it? what expenses did you account for and what did you miss?

I know our situation might be different since I wasn't working when we decided...but I'll try to be helpful anyway.

One step for us was to pay off certain debt, and we did that. We thought for a couple years about when we would want a baby, and Sujeet made more of a plan for when we could start trying without feeling stressed out, based on figuring out when that would be paid off and how much savings we'd have. Another was to calculate possible costs after the baby, and trying to figure out if a yearly pay raise by then would help even out the added costs, and the added insurance. Thought of diapers, formula if we needed it, etc and how much would that add. Well we figured we could afford it after not having a certain bill anymore and the baby being born after a raise that evened out the baby's extra costs. So we spend more a month b/c of diapers, formulas, and other baby necessities, but the health insurance was taken care of by a raise and that helped us in other areas too. It wasn't a large raise, but enough to help.

We didn't really forget to account for anything. Formula has been cheaper than we figured, diapers and the rest is the same. Nothing has financially surprised us, we mostly expected the costs that we have.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of expenses for the first 5 years.

I'm thinking, and correct me if I'm wrong, that given we're a 2-income household (and plan to stay that way) those 5 years will be very expensive... and that it should be easier until it's time for college again

Um, who said we could afford it?!?! Seriously though, if you wait to have a baby until you can afford it you'll never have one. You'll always find something to spend the extra money on. We haven't looked at any of our expenses or anything else. I'll make sacrifices and buy things for the baby instead of for myself, so will Javi.

But that limits them to a state school. I went to a state school and while it's ok, there's not nearly the kind of opportunities someone from a good pvt school gets. I have cousins who have graduated from the Ivies and they get companies on-campus who don't even look sideways at the state university of new jersey....

Yeah. Well maybe 3-4 years. Kids can go to preK now at age 4 and sometimes age 3, although it's usually only a half day.

We don't have a lot of extra expenses. But we'll gladly cut those out, I'm more concerned of it not fitting into our bottom line.
