Open Question:

If you were to move, would you move to a town that was 'poorer' than the town you currently live in?

I'm considering a move within Jersey next year, and for those who don't know, this state is pretty snobbish on town lines. People in town A think they're better than town B, and so on. It's silly but it's how it is.

Now, the state of NJ facilitates direct comparisons by creating a grading system of socioeconomic status. They assign a letter grade between A and I to each town based on socioeconomic factors. A is poorest and I is richest. The grade is based on percent of population with no high school diploma, percent with some college, occupation, population density, income, unemployment and poverty.

Generally speaking, we're strongly discouraged from moving from a (for example) GH town to a G or F town.

Do you guys think I should take this seriously?

If I do, it'll make coming up with a shortlist of towns to look in really easy. But I also think I'll probably miss some great deals (I see a lot of good deals in towns with lower grades).

I think you have to look into the towns and how far to your job and if your pay scale will remain the same even while moving to a "poorer" place. I wouldn't discount the towns just because they are on a letter system. Where we want to move in Alabama, it probably is considered poorer than here. But at the same time their economy is more stable and hasn't had a huge bubble and then collapse like a lot of Florida. And also the jobs in the cities pay as much as our cities in Florida. The difference is in the smaller towns there...only some jobs thrive, but you can find some very cute areas to live for inexpensive prices. And if it's not a far commute to a city for work, it's much better than our Florida situation. We have heard all the time "Alabama? WHY??!" hahaha. But the truth is those people have not been there before and they usually love Tennessee, and the part of AL we like looks so much like Tennessee. Just the name "Alabama" throws people off. Should we care what people think of it if it means our life will be better financially?

My dad(parents) moved up you already know, and he was able to shift his self employed business he does from here to there with no problems, he was very relieved b/c he wasn't sure how it would go. He is making similar money up there, and that is in the small towns not even in the city, and his living expenses are a lot lower.

If one town is a little less prestigious but you can still find a nice place to live and spend less money, that would be great IMO.

The towns I'd be considering are all within 45-50 miles of each other, so pay scales won't be impacted. The primary difference will be in the socioeconomic makeups of the towns and quality of their schools.

Interesting. Thanks.

I haven't been paid weekly in so long...I couldn't begin to weigh pros or cons. Seems like it might be better, though.

I don't mean to go on and on...but the socioeconomic makeup of towns in AL are a lot different than what I am used to, to be honest. But that is because I live in a sort of bubble here. Where we live is mostly white, no poor areas, lots of new things, not a very old town(built up in the 60's). Alabama towns are much older, so they have historic areas, run down areas, much more diverse of a population, but also new built areas. My mom says she was used to that growing up in Flushing, NYC but me and my sis are spoiled by living in newer areas most of our lives. She always says, "normal towns have poorer areas, more diverse races, more history...where we live in Florida is very nice but is not normal." The problem with our nice town is it's mostly retirement ppl and service industry, no high paying jobs besides lawyers and Drs, and you have to drive to Tampa for career jobs. So it seems it's not logical for us to stay in a really nice area if we can't work here and always have to drive far away for work. This town was made for Northern retirees who wanted to live in a nice area after living in hectic NY. They don't need jobs. Anyway that's my take on things for why we might want to move somewhere considered "poorer" but still has nice areas.
