That's it, from now on we're switching to processed foods only! No more fruit.

Sure, I'd like to see you explaining that reasoning to your wife. Somehow I don't think she'll buy it.

Maybe I should keep the flies around.

"See, this is what happens when you eat fruit!!"

Is eggplant a fruit?

Though commonly thought of as a vegetable, eggplant is actually a fruit . . . Specifically a berry.

When Joel and Cat were over for the weekend two weeks ago, I served us some red wine, a bottle I had opened two days before. Since I didn't have a cork to stick into the bottle, I only took some kitchen paper and stuffed it in.

As we started drinking, Cat noticed a fruit fly in her glass. And then two...three...four...twenty  and Joel and I noticed some in our glasses as well. Those tiny phuckers had found a way into the bottle. It was gross. Needless to say, we bought a new bottle.

Oh man, gross!

Once my mother found a lettuce infested with greenflies. So she warned me not to use it and left it in the sink for later disposal.

Whoops. Of course my dad came along, saw a supposedly already washed lettuce ripe for the eating, and made us all cheese and lettuce sandwiches for the picnic we were going on.

I realised he must've used the infested lettuce only after a few mouthfuls! :dead:

Oh yuck, Rachel!! Extra protein you didn't ask for!

I also one bit into a piece of chocolate with whole almonds and there was a little worm coming out of the almond, looking at me. Plus a maggot in dried-fig experience which I will just not share.

Does anyone have food moths in their cupboards? Thos are hard to get rid of (current issue in my household - call me parasite Julie - first flies, now moths, yuck)

I even found out that bell peppers are technically fruit too..

Peppers come from blossoms making them fruits botanically but they are treated as vegetables culinary because they are not sweet. They blend better with vegetables.

Marilyn-

Do you have any good potato soup recipes? I feel like having potato soup for dinner. Maybe I'll try something like baked potato soup. Something creamy.

One of my friends is infesting Sheffield with chilli plants! :D She has all kinds of varieties, mild to hot and red to green to black, filling up her house and her friends' houses. :D She grew most of them from seeds from chillis bought at the supermarket.

Julie - I have never heard of food moths! Darn pests!

this one I haven't tried yet but it looks good...

Potato, Corn, and Leek Chowder

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped leek (about 1 large)

1/2 cup finely chopped celery

1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper

2 cups whole milk

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

3 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth

2 cups fresh corn kernels (about 4 ears)

2 pounds cubed peeled Yukon gold or red potato

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley

3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

Heat butter and oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add leek, celery, and bell pepper; cook 4 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently. Combine milk and flour in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk. Slowly add milk mixture to pan, stirring constantly. Stir in broth, corn, potato, salt, and freshly ground black pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes or until potato is tender. Stir in parsley and chives.

That does sound good! :)

I found this recipe for a supposedly lower fat baked potato soup:

http://healthycooking.suite101.com/article.cfm/potato_soup

Baked Potato Soup

* 4 large baking potatoes (about 2-1/2 lbs.)

* 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

* 6 cups 2% milk

* 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded low-fat Cheddar cheese, divided

* 1/2 tsp. kosher salt or Maldon salt

* 1/2 tsp. pepper

* 3/4 cup bacon bits, divided

* 3/4 cup green onions, chopped, divided

* 4 oz. nonfat sour cream

Wash and ####### potatoes. Place in microwave, 2 at a time, and bake 8-10 minutes. Scoop out the flesh. Mash and set aside.

Place flour in a dutch oven over medium heat. Whisk in milk, gradually, until blended. Cover and cook until thickened, 7-10 minutes. Add mashed potatoes, 3/4 cup of cheese, salt and pepper and 1/2 cup bacon bits. Remove from burner and add 1/2 cup onions and sour cream. Return to burner and simmer on low 8-10 minutes.

Serve, garnished with remaining bacon bits, green onions and cheese on top.

Serves 8.

Per serving: 345 calories, 7 g fat, 27 mg cholesterol, 52 g carbohydrate, 4 g fiber, 18 g protein, 10% Vitamin A, 36% Vitamin C, 34% calcium, 14% iron

------

Sujeet doesn't even like fake meat bacon bits I don't think, but I could just have some on the side for me. He's not used to bacon flavor.

I don't have a dutch oven, but can I just use a pot with lid?

this is my mom's recipe.. it does have ham in it but you could just leave that out...

Cream of Potato Soup

1/2 cup margarine

4 potaotes, cubed (about 3 cups)

2 cups cubed zucchini

2 cups thinly sliced carrots

1 cup chopped onion

2 ups chicken broth (could use vegie broth instead)

5 tablespoons flour

3 1/2 cups milk (you can use about 1 1/2 cups cream if you want and the rest milk)

2 cups cubed ham

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1 vegetable bouillon cube, crushed

Melt margarine in a large pot. Fry onion until clear and add the rest of the vegetables and the broth. Cover and cook on medium heat until vegetables are tender (about 15 minutes). Remove some broth from pot and mix in four. Return to pot and whisk. Add milk and ham. Simmer on low for 30 minutes. Add seasonings. Serve hot.

That does sound good! :)
