I disagree there is a distinction in meaning between different spellings of the word. I also think its a mistake to class it as free speech - "they can say it but I can't". The point should surely be the word itself has a pejorative meaning which is clearly racist and which can't be removed or "taken back" no matter who is saying it. In some respects I think its actually worse for blacks to use this to describe each other as it is part of the language of slavery.

I agree with you...it all means the same #######...I don't like it no matter who says it and no matter what context it is used. That word really pisses me off....I don't believe that word could ever be "cleaned up" or made positive....

It certainly can't because its been made some sort of exclusive slang term within a very narrow range of context (i.e. who says it). The "positive" meaning isn't ascribed to the broader English speaking world - and for everyone else the word is taboo because of the original meaning is unchanged.
