He probably said the ghetto-hip version '#######' and not the racist version that ends with the -er.

Free speech for some.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Even the racist -er version of the word is not illegal to say. You're free to say it.

This isn't Europe.

I disagree there is a distinction in meaning between different spellings of the word. I also think its a mistake to class it as free speech - "they can say it but I can't". The point should surely be the word itself has a pejorative meaning which is clearly racist and which can't be removed or "taken back" no matter who is saying it. In some respects I think its actually worse for blacks to use this to describe each other as it is part of the language of slavery.

Your opinions on it notwithstanding, the reality is that the word '#######' (not the -er variant) is used by some black people in the US today and is not considered to be derogatory at all.

That's the reality on the ground, today.

You can choose to be outraged over it, if you'd like :P

I don't think its a question of outrage - I just don't really see the distinction. I've heard the arguments before about taking back the negative language - but does it really change the meaning of the word or the perception of broader society? Probably not...

In any case I look at it like this - you don't see women going around referring to each other as "whores" and "bitches" as common modes of address. Nor would it be exactly normal to start a conversation with "I am a c*nt", which is essentially what this is.

Slang version vs. derogatory version?

Debates like this are never 'settled'. They don't have to be 'settled'. A large proportion of black people use the word '#######' and mean nothing malicious by it. Those are the facts, we can argue the sociological implications of it all till we're blue in the face but those are the facts on the ground, today.

Just sayin'.

I don't think it really matters what they mean by the term. The word carries beyond the context of their subculture, and its meaning in that respect remains unchanged.
