We did the same for their Egyptian Birth certificates but the American ones are simply their first names, dads name as middle and our last name. :)

Isn't Mikha'il the name of one of the angels, according to Islam? My husband and I discussed angels a while back, and I remember similarities to the Biblical names.

Michael is one of the archangels; along with Gabriel and Rafael. As found on Wikipedia, here are the Islamic translations of the archangels...

In Islam,[15] the named archangels include: • Jibrail (or Jibraaiyl or Jibril or Gabriel in English and the Bible). Jibra'il is the Archangel responsible for revealing the Qur'an to Muhammad. Jibra'il is known as the angel who communicates with the Prophets. He is mentioned specifically by name and as the Holy Spirit in the Qur'an. (Gabriel, for those that don't know it, was also the archangel that announced to Mary that she was expecting Jesus)

• Mikail (or Mikaaiyl or Michael). Michael is often depicted as the Archangel of mercy who is responsible of bringing rain and thunder to Earth.

• Israfil (or Israafiyl or Raphael). According to the Hadith, Israfil is the Angel responsible for signalling the coming of Judgment Day by blowing a horn and sending out a Blast of Truth. It translates to Hebrew as Raphael.

My only suggestion on the name Mikha'il is to spell it without the apostrophe as that could be a headache for all in the future. Just my two cents. I would just spell it Mikhail and he'll be a-ok.

Interesting. Just got home and asked my husband about this. He said Moroccans will use the name Jibrail but not Mikha'il or Israfil. He's not sure why that is.

I'm sure it has to do with the importance of the Archangel Gabriel in his announcement of the Quran to the Prophet Mohammed - I would assume it is out of reverence to this historical even.

From my understanding, some scholars consider it taboo to name children after any angels.... never figured out why some name them Jibreel though.

Now you know about Jibreel. But I think it is a shame that those scholars view all those children named Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel and all derivatives of those names as just little taboo children who they and their parents just aren't going to get to heaven because of a name. Seems a little strange to me.

who said any scholars are saying those children and their parents will be denied heaven because of their names?

I was exagerating...but to say those names are taboo...taboo=what? no TV for a week? no dessert? no favor from God? no heaven?

I think it's tradition--something you just don't do...taboo might be a strong word.

I read what you wrote, and I also posted that I was exagerating too, but remember taboo is a very impactful word - here's the definition from Wikipedia:

A taboo is a strong social prohibition (or ban) against words, objects, actions, or discussions that are considered undesirable or offensive by a group, culture, society, or community. Breaking a taboo is usually considered objectionable or abhorrent. Some taboo activities or customs are prohibited by law and transgressions may lead to severe penalties. Other taboos result in embarrassment, shame and rudeness.

So, as related to what you had said...what would be the punishment to be bestowed by breaking this taboo. Do you get my drift? I'm not trying to stir up a can of worms, I just was pointing out why the name Jibril was so popular amongst Arab countries - they venerate the Archangel Jibril because of his importance in Islam to Mohammed. That's it. If there's a taboo associated with that, then there must be a heck of alot of people who are committing some type of religious taboo - and there is normally a punishment or a penalty that goes along with that. So my question is what are the scholars saying is the penalty for this taboo?

Yep, less than three weeks until due date! It could be any time now (or 5 weeks from now, I suppose)...I am starting to feel done/ready/a little impatient. Probably due to the fact that I'm a teacher and off for the summer. Honestly, it's a little boring, but at least I have had time to get things ready.

Simo and I continue to have talks about baby names and possible circumcision (if it's a boy). I think we have agreed to have any male children circumcised here, by a Muslim doctor, but not until the child is a bit older (like a year). We can celebrate it later in Morocco (whenever we can afford to go there).
