This may sound like a strange idea, but we are in the Internet age after all. Would it be possible for his family in Morocco to have the party, you have the procedure and a party here in the U.S. at the same time, and you all link up via webcam? Our office does videoconferences on a 50-inch screen, and it's a little bit like having everyone in the same room. You could save the money on plane tickets and rent whatever video equipment you might need in both countries.

Circumcision is huge in judaism. We circumcised our son when he was 8 days old in our living room and my in laws watched the whole thing via webcam.

The Sunnah is at 7 days old but I don't think it's a big deal to do it in the hospital when he's born and then have the party when he's a week old. I wouldn't wait too much past 7 days though because it seems like the older they are the more it would hurt and the longer the pain would linger. My son was done in the hospital when he was born and he was over it as soon as he got to nurse lol.

We had our son circumsized at the hospital when he was 2 days old. Simo was more concerned about him not having the pain and memories he had of having it done when older. I don't think they use anything for pain in Morocco either. From what Simo explained to me is someone holds you down while someone else (usually someone from the mosque or neighborhood) grabs it and cuts. I would be affraid to have anyone other than a professional doctor performing the procedure and something going terribly wrong that could jepordize him ever having children of his own. I know his sister didn't have her son circumsized until he was a year old, but she did take him to the hospital to have it done.

If you don't have it done while you are at the hospital, will insurance even cover it later on? Someone else we know didn't have it done right away and had to pay out of pocket like $1000+.

My son was circumcized at 2 days old.

I recently saw a video on exactly how they do it and for those of u who don't know..they stick tweezer type things inside and stretch out the cover/foreskin, which is very painful. Then they stick a clamp inside between the pen!s and foreskin which latches on the outside and pinches it. They leave it like that and continue stretching out the foreskin, again which causes very much pain. They then unclamp the foreskin and cut all the way down and around.

I can honestly say that if I have another boy....I dunno if I'll allow him to be circumcized coz the infant they were performing the procedure on was crying so hard and loud and he couldn't do anything to stop the pain. It was so horrible.....

From what I understand, most insurance companies do NOT cover circumcision these days--it is considered to be "cosmetic surgery." At least here in Minneapolis, I have heard, that it costs quite a bit more to get it done at the hospital than it does in your regular doctor's office by a Pediatrician a few days later (which is an issue since we would likely be paying out of pocket for it).

I would rather get it done here--probably by a Pediatrician. It doesn't matter to me where it is done, and I would be thrilled to have a party at our house to welcome our new one into the world (as long as Simo does the cooking and cleaning for the party--after all I will have just given birth!).

We'll have to have a big talk about the circumcision in Morocco idea...

Thisis one of those moments where I wish I knew if I was having a boy or girl!

I can not imagine ever taking my 6 or 8 year old son and have him circumsized at that age.

That is just plain torture.

They do not even recommend them in Canada anymore.

I seen a baby getting it done in the hospital here in the US when my grand daughter was born. I felt so bad for that little guy :crying:

When the baby is newborn is best. It is much easier on them and they heal quickly. I don't think there are painkillers given even when they are newly born.

Many jewish familys have circumcision parties at their homes called a "bris" (sp?) where a rabbi comes a performs the circumsion. So it might help if you research online how they do it. As for being hygenic and all that, it depends on the instruments only. Just make sure the cutting instruments are sterile and there is sterile bandaging.

My insurance paid for Ayman's surgery and it clearly states on the EOB it is for circumcision. Strange...

Was it a presonal choice not to find out the sex of the baby? If I'm being too nosey...sorry.

Hi all,

I do not yet know if I'm having a boy or girl, but my husband and I have been talking about circumcision just in case. At first we talked about just getting it done here at the hospital, but now he is saying he would like to wait and have it done in Morocco with a big ceremony, etc.

While I love the idea of going to Morocco to visit and spend time with his family, I do have some concerns about the circumcision there...

First of all--is it hygenic? Simo told me that he had his done when he was 4 years old (ouch!) and they used a scissors! He remembers that day very vividly...

Second, how long should one wait to have it done? Tickets to Morocco, at least during the high seasons, are ridiculously expensive right now, and I don't see us coming into any large sums of money soon (lottery, anyone?). I can imagine it taking us at least a year or two to have enough money to travel.

Third, do they use anesthesia/some sort of a local painkiller? I would hate to see my babe in pain...

I'm sure there are other questions I haven't thought of yet. If anyone has any insight I would appreciate it. I may be thinking about this unnecessarily (if we have a girl), but I'm sure others have dealt with this issue.

Shukran bezzef,

Carolyn

Hey,

I have decided to have it done in the hospital. My husband was upset about that because he really wanted the whole party when they are 4 years old etc. I just told him that we can have all kinds of parties as the baby gets older. I dont want my son subjected to a cleric with a razor blade which is what they did to him. NO.

I had my son's done in the hospital shortly after birth.

I used to work in a OB/GYN office . One day, we did one. It was the most horribly painful cry I have ever heard. I would not subject someone I love to that, no matter what the reason, at an age when they will remember the pain and trauma.

My husband was talking about having it done last year. I said NOW? Are you crazy? He hasn't brought it up again since. I'm not bringing it up.

I'd much rather have it done as a baby so he won't remember for more than a few days at most than to not have it done, and when he's grown and finds out that it's a requirement in the religion, he has to have it done as an adult. I'd think that would be WAY more traumatic IMHO.

I don't know about today but medicaid paid for my son's 11 years ago.
