Hey ppl's!

I'm probably totally " blonde" right now...but.....I never looked into the whole SNN application, because I thought I wouldn't need it....I'm married now om my K-1 visa and appilied for AOS a week ago........but found out I can't use my Dutch driverlisence here, because of the insurance company and was wondering if an application for a SNN can get me my MT driverlisence faster then waiting till my EAD comes back? Does anyone know? And if yes, how do I apply for a SNN...cause I couldn't find it on USCIS or this site.....

thanks for you help guys! Elsbeth

As a K-1 you are eligible to file for a SSN until day 76 after your entry into the USA.

You won't find it on the USCIS website because they do not issue it, you need to go to the Social Security website. SSA.gov

My fiance arrived recently and we're going to request his SSN in a few weeks. I am looking at the application and I wondered if anyone knew where a completed sample of this form may be located. I'm a bit confused by questions 10-13. Am I as his US fiance supposed to put in my info there as "acting on his behalf"? Also, is he considered a "legal alien allowed to work"? Any help is appreciated. I hope this was not considered a threadjack, but my question kind of dovetailed with this. THANKS ALL!

I love this question! I raised the same question with the SSA and they said that their form was crystal clear and that any idiot could answer this question. I supposed they were right because they were able to answer it for me. Inspite of incredibly poor wording, what the question is trying to ask is: Has the applicant ever applied for, or has anyone acting on behalf of the applicant ever applied for a SSN for the applicant? If your fiance/spouse has never applied for or had an application submitted for them to get a SSN then the answer is no and proceed with the rest of the form. If they have had an application filed on their behalf for a SSN, then the other questions must be answered.

Hope this helps.

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensedregistered pharmacist". (because somebody gives a damn)

Thanks guys!!! I went into the SSA office yesterday and was out in like 10 min....totally easy..I just needed my passport and marriage certificate, I heard right away that it was ok and that I will have the card in the mail in 2 weeks.

But...what I still was wondering....does anyone know if that will help me get my driverlicense?

I know I have to wait till my EAD before I can work...does that mean that I will have to file for another SSN when I get that? Or does that go automatically in the system?

Thanks guys!!

Please don't feel "dumb" at all. If we're the dumb ones then most of us here are guilty. It is a very poorly worded question and they refuse to accept the fact that a simple and small change in wording would greatly clarify the issue. Welcome to the dark side

How long did they give the validity of the driver's license? I thought they only gave it for the validity of your stay in USA! :o

We tried to get the license but by that time the I-94 was expired so they said they wouldn't give it till hubby got his green card. I thought others here on VJ managed to get a license, but only for the validity of their I-94. I guess the requirements might be different in different states (we tried in CA).

I thought others here on VJ managed to get a license, but only for the validity of their I-94. I guess the requirements might be different in different states (we tried in CA).

Some states require SSN to process the driver's license application at DMV while others do not. If you live in CA or applied in CA then you need a SSN. If you apply for Drivers License in CA and still have at least 4 weeks of I-94 left before expiration then they will allow you to apply for the Driver's License but will expire when your I-94 does. Also they will verify your SSN number before the actual Drivers License is released. Now if you happen to get your SSN before you are married as well as Driver's License or Driver's Permit (and it expire, which 99% will mostly happen) and then your I-94 expires, you cannot change your name nor extend your driver's license/dirvers permit until you have been granted a PR card or approved. I know as I tried changing my name at SSN and also trying to extend my expired drivers permit in CA. DMV said they cannot issue an extension of my expired drivers license/permit as my name on my EAD card (married name) was different from my SSN card (maiden name) even after showing them my marriage certificate and showing my EAD card. So I proceeded to SSA office to change my name providing the required docs to change my name and they denied to change it as they do not accept "pending cases as legal status in the US." Since my I-94 had expired, I dont have any "permanent status" so SSA told me I can only wait til my AOS is approved before getting my name changed on my SSN card and this also means I cannot even get a valid CA state ID nor drivers license until AOS is approved....

Even though you cannot be issued an SSN card without proof of current work authorization, you may be able to have the name corrected on your SSN record.

RM 00203.510 D4 Correcting Numident Data When a Replacement Card Cannot Be Issued

If the alien does not provide evidence of work authorization or a valid nonwork reason, explain that no replacement card can be issued.

Although a replacement card cannot be issued, the Numident can be corrected if the alien has provided documentation supporting the change, e.g., a name change.

If the alien provides documentation supporting the change, process the SS-5 to update the Numident information but suppress the issuance of a card.

RM 00203.510 Alien without Work Authorization - Nonwork Need for an SSN:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203510#D4

Once your SSN record has been corrected, you can request an SSN Verification Printout, which will provide you with proof of your SSN and the name that currently appears on the record until you are eligible to be issued an SSN card.
