We got a great deal because my husband is a travel agent so we stayed at a little bit more expensive hotel, but if I recall correctly I'm pretty sure there's a Holiday Inn or a Holiday Inn Express close by the embassy. They're usually pretty inexpensive! We had a heckuva time with hotels, and ended up staying three different hotels for the three nights! :P I'm sure you guys will fare much better. Good luck. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

There used to be a Days Inn that was within walking distance (a few city blocks) of the American Consulate. I just did a google for it and the address is:

Days Inn - Vancouver Downtown

921 West Pender Street

Vancouver, BC V6C 1M2 CA

Phone: 604-681-4335

I am not sure what you classify as inexpensive but I did a search on Expedia for the date you mentioned and it came up as 146.00 CDN per night. Expedia also shows it as a 3 star. To be honest, I am not sure you will find anything much cheaper than that in the downtown area without compromising the quality of the hotel.

Based on a recommendation from the forum, I stayed at the Barclay Hotel when I was in Vancouver for my interview. It was about a 10-minute walk to the Consulate.

I was there in late March and the room was $50/night. The place isn't anything special...the room was tiny but clean. It's right downtown, though.

Hello Heather,

If you want really cheap, there is a youth hostile not too far of a walk and/or short bus ride.

It's on Pender close to Gas Town.

I have not stayed there.

I used to live in Van.

And for alternative options do check craigslist Vancouver and search guest house.

It is cheap and nice, and anywhere you are in Vancouver, it will not take longer than half hour or so by bus or Skytrain(which is cheap, $1.75 still maybe??) to get to the consulate downtown.

Congrats on the good news and good luck!

I got the flight and the moving trailer booked as soon as we knew our interview date, but for some reason I didn't think to book the hotel till about 7 days before the interview. The Barclay was full, but I did a search on kayak.com (which simply searches a bunch of other sites like priceline, hotels, hotwire, travelocity, etc) and it came up with a $37 USD option at "a 3-star hotel". Their gimmick is you don't know which hotel you get until you book, but I've booked a couple flights with that trick and it turned out well, so I did it and we ended up in the Holiday Inn just two blocks from the medical examiner and 0.8miles from the consulate.

After taxes, it ended up being closer to $49/night and parking is $17 CAD / night (I brought my car so we can drive the rest of the move), so it's not as great a deal as it first seemed, but you probably won't find better except at the hostle. You might also find cheaper parking if you try, but after reading reviews of the Howard Johnson hotel where someone talked about their car being vandalized and many complained of noise and plywood beds, I figured I'd stick with the underground parking here. The hotel itself is fairly nice - nothing extravagant, but comfortable, with free wifi and dinner appetizers. They were nice enough to let me check in early at 8am with no added fee. I was even able to book a third night through Hotwire for two days from now and luckily it gave me the same hotel. =)
