Medical Exam In Brasil for CR1

I know about the travelstate.gov list of vaccinations but I guess what im trying to learn about is how things work at the exam. My wife has been told by the Dr in Rio De Janeiro that she can take her Xray and physical (breast cancer , I guess, and uterus exam) exam before she goes to the medical exam and to bring those with her. The only Vaccine that she needs to get now is the HPV vaccine, she will wait until she goes to Rio to get that because it is half the cost there than it is in her home town of Belem. She told me that she will go to her medical exam and they will tell her where to go to get the vaccine, so how does that work? She goes to get the vaccine then takes the proof back to the Dr and then they will complete her case after the results of her blood test ? She will have 4 days until her interview and I am wondering if that is enough time considering she will have to leave to get the vaccine and take the documents back.

I am also trying to figure out the same thing. I spoke with a doctor in Recife (which is the closest one), and I am still a little confused about it. Apparently my husband needs to get the vaccines beforehand and take the card to the doctor.. once we get to the doctor, she will give us some forms and then we need to go to a nearby location to get the X-ray and the blood test, and then take them back to the doc in the afternoon. I guess the doctor then signs off on everything and we are good to go. She said it will all be done the same day. I don't think your wife will have any problem getting it all done if she has 4 days before the interview.

I have another, unrelated question for you... I know you already posted a thread about what language to speak at the interview. What have you guys decided on? Do you speak Portuguese?

Everyone seems to feel that it does not make a difference if you speak Portuguese at the interview, and I was relieved to hear that Virginia (of EdgarVirginia) spoke Portuguese and got her visa. My husband's English is pretty limited (he understands a lot but he is not really fluent, speaking-wise) and I speak fluent Portuguese. But I still can't help feeling like we should try to do the interview in English, all the same. What do you think? Will you guys do the interview in English or Portuguese?

Good luck!

I think people sometimes is concerned about not doing the interview in English because the interviewr might think ''they don't speak english, how they communicate?''

But in this case, you speak portuguese, so it's pretty obvious that you guys can communicate.

Still, even though that's a fear, we don't hear of them not approving people if they have their interview in their native language. So just go with Portuguese.

Hi Nessa,

Thanks for the advice. My gut feeling is starting to say that we should do the interview in Portuguese (I think my husband will feel much more comfortable and obviously his comprehension will be better), and your statement echoes that. I am not decided yet, but I think that is sound advice.

We (as in my wife because my opinion counts for nada :crying: ) have decided to speak Portuguese.

As for the Medical part of it, Im still waiting on a response back from the Dr in Rio. Like i said they told my wife she can do the X-ray and her gynecology exam at her Dr in Para and I am emailing them to confirm that because that just doesnt sound right. As for the vaccine thing, my wife said that the Dr told her they will either give her the vaccines or give her the information on where to go and get it. Maybe its at the same place they will do her blood work, she only needs the HPV vaccine. I dont know yet, on the bright side , after 4 days of working with TAM to use my miles I got her the tickets to Rio at last. Cost 20,000 miles because I couldnt make the reservations online without my password to withdraw points, they never sent me one and I dont have the 10-20 days to wait for it to come in the mail, I dont even know if the Greve is over or not too. So now I am left with 12,250 points just shy of the 15,000 points to upgrade her flight to the US to first class, she was so dissappointed about that

Well, I believe Virginia said that she did her exams and such at her local doc and then just took them to the panel physician in Rio the day before her interview. So I think what the doc in Rio told you is correct. I am a little confused on the vaccine bit, since my husband has had all of his vaccines in the past but I don't think he has a card showing that he did... guess I will have to ask the doctor before we go.

The postal strike still goes on, by the way (the second one this year). Too bad about not flying first class to the States :( I only have once and that was because I missed my international flight, got put on standby for the next day and got super lucky that they stuck me in first class. It was truly awesome. Probably will never happen again.

Anyway, do you know of any decent hotels near the Consulate?

Like i said they told my wife she can do the X-ray and her gynecology exam at her Dr in Para and I am emailing them to confirm that because that just doesnt sound right.

My experience is that not all doctors do things the same way (I'm talking about the doctors the consulate tell you can go). I remember lots of brazilians here on VJ going through the same process and the way doctors handled it was different. I heard that the doctor in Rio makes things work in 1 day, dunno how, maybe that's why the doc asked her to bring the x-ray and gynecological exam.

My doctor was in Curitiba. When I called her she said I could bring the gynecological exam. She also said that the vaccines she would have to see me first cuz not all vaccines are required for all people. It depends on the age, your health history, etc. also, she wanted to see my shots record.

Anyway, it'll save her a lot of time by doing what the doc said she can do in Para. If you think about it, even if the doc was BSing her, worst case scenario she'll have to do it again in Rio, best case scenario she'll save a lot of time by having things ready (which I'm sure will be the case)

My experience with the doctor was easy: made an appointment, he told me what shots I should get and other tests - breast, full gynecologic plus blood tests for HIV and syphilis. I went off to get all this done with labs covered by my health insurance plan. As for the vaccines I went to the public health clinic and had them for free. With the results in hand, I then returned to his office. He took a look at the results and put all this info on the form - I guess is the I-693 - said that everything was OK and gave me the sealed envelope to take to my interview.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Nessa, that is really helpful. I guess I have to call the doctor here again and ask her exactly how she does things... since we have to travel 2 hours to get to the doctor, I don't want to have to go back more than once...

She will find out the names of the hotel today, the Dr's office is being very helpful it seems and are going to get th names of those hotels for her. Really nice of them, I dont think i know any Dr's office here that would do that.

There is a hotel right across from the Consulate, it is R135,00 + 5% tax and there is another one near by that is cheap for R110,00 + 5% tax Ill try to get the names of them before my wife goes to work.

Fab, thanks, that is really nice!

I think that we will probably speak Portuguese at the interview too, though I don't think I will tell my husband that yet, so he keeps practicing his English!

I called the doctor that I chose (in Rio) to do my husband's exam and asked which vaccines he needed based on his age. The doctor gave us a list and my husband had those done in Manaus, along with his x-ray and his blood tests. He took everything with him to Rio and the doctor did the "exam" - which was really just some questions and he checked my husband's weight. It was simple and easy.

I did, however, check with the doctor that the laboratory where he got his blood tests done was satisfactory (which he said it was seeing that it has a good reputation).

My husband did his medical exam yesterday. Here is a quick report!

The required vaccines were: Tetanus, MMR, and Varicella (chickenpox). He actually didn't need the chickenpox one, since he has already had it - but we didn't know because the doctor's office used a different word for it (catapora), which I didn't know. He had tetanus done a couple of years ago. The other two he had done at the public health clinic, which was free.

We went to the doctor's office - they gave us two "prescription" sheets, one for the blood test and one for the x-ray. We got the blood test done and they told us to come back in the afternoon to pick up the results. Then we got the x-ray done - they had the results for us in about 30 minutes afterwards.

In the afternoon, we picked up the blood test results (we had to wait about 40 minutes after they said they would be done). Then we went back to the doctor's office. My husband went in to see the doctor and showed her the results (all perfect). She did a basic exam and did a lot of body measurements, apparently. Then she gave him the sealed envelope and sent him on his way. Pretty easy - all done in one day (well, two, counting the vaccines).

Costs

Vaccines: free

X-ray: R$50

Blood test: R$72

Doctor's fee: R$170

Total: R$292 (or about US$183)
