I'm getting married to a UK citizen on September 13th. He's not ready to emmigrate yet. He figures it will be about 3 years til he's ready

Since we're going to wait that long to file, would we be better off with a K3 or IR1?

Also, I don't earn enough to sponsor him, any suggestions? If he transferred funds to my savings account before we applied, would that work?

Your best to file the IR1. You will probably need to get a cosponsor. Since you will be married, you should put the money in a joint account.

Yes, the IR1 route sounds best in your situation. It takes a little longer but for you it just means you file a bit sooner. $3 in assets can replace $1 in income shortfall, so if there's enough cash in the joint account, that may put you over the minimum and avoid a joint sponsor. London tends to be pretty lax on the income requirements anyway. Since you've got a couple years, perhaps there's nothing preventing you from improving your income.
