Someone suggested When My K-1 wife and her daughter adjust status that they file a I-765 (application for work authorization) for my step daughter (K2).

The reason being to get a SSN number for her.

Any thoughts?

You don't have to pay a fee for I-765 if you file with I-485, so why not ?

I filed for everything (AOS, AP and work authorization) for my wife (K-1) and her 2 kids (K-2) who are now 18 and 14 for a couple of reasons. First of all, my wife and oldest child can't get a driver license here in California without the work permit or green card. I also got the the work permits for the kids so they can get SSNs.

I'm very glad I filed for all 3 right away because on June 21st, they received their AP's and on June 22nd my wife's father passed away unexpectedly so we all flew back to Malaysia on the 22nd.

Anyway, my 2 cents is go ahead and file for it all. When my wife and kids return next week (they stayed longer than I did), we will try and get SSNs for the kids and driver licenses for my wife and step-son. I think it's worth it to get them all...even though your step-daughter is only 11.

Good luck!

EAD allows you to get a social security number and a social security number makes things a lot easier if you wish to have the child under an american inssurance, so yes I would file for it.

I just filed AOS for Rin and her three children (ages 12, 9, and 7). We included EAD for all (why not, it's free). By getting SSNs, We will not have to get ITINs to file taxes. Additionally, when we file taxes for 2007 (have extension valid until 10/15/2008) if we have SSNs by then we will receive the tax stimulus rebate ($2,100 for married couple with three children). Without SSNs, rebate = $0!

Life in the US is generally easier with a SSN.

I called the local social security administration office before we went to get Natasha's SSN. I assumed Vika (her daughter) would be able to get a SSN too, but the woman told me that K-2 visas were ineligible for SSN numbers, without EAD. I specifically pointed out that she was 11 and therefore ineligible to work anywhere, and was told that it didn't matter - no SSN without EAD.

We haven't received EADs yet so I cannot affirm that having the EAD allows for the SSN for a K-2 visa holder, but there you have it anyway.
