We had a conversation about the realities of immigration law from both of our countries and it turned out marriage was the only viable option.

Romantic, huh?

Same here! It's gotta be a German thing...

He talked to an immigration attorney here in the US about how to bring me over save and sound and then called me, told me what the attorney had said and ended with "well, shall we get married then?"

Next time he visited Germany he brought me flowers, though!

Conditional Permanent Resident since September 20, 2006

I am extraordinarily patient,

provided I get my own way in the end!

Similar for me and my hubby. We had met in France and due to visa issues there, we both left and returned to our respective countries. He was trying to figure out ways to get to the US and I decided to make a trip to Egypt to see him again. I had been secretly looking into the fiance and marriage visas, but didn't say anything. So when I told him I had booked a ticket and he actually believed me  he asked me why. He wanted to know why I would be willing to do this and what I was expecting from him.... I told him I just needed to see him again and maby we could figure something out and make the long distance thing work. His response - So, do you want to marry me? Yes. Here in Egypt? Yes. When you come to visit? Yes.... but my break at work is over, I'll call you later  I called him the next day to say, wait, we need to talk about this.... and he proposed the right way  We didn't get married in Egypt bc of the laws at the time, but my first day there I looked at him and told him I wanted a ring. He went out the next day and bought me two

My wedding proposal is a pretty funny story (the last paragraph is the funny part).

Let me give some background. I had jokingly proposed to her once or twice in the past. She really didn't think that was funny as I did. :bonk:

Anyway, on one of my trips to visit her in Costa Rica, I planned a nice weekend trip to the beach resort in Flamingo where we first fell in love. I figured it would be the perfect place to propose. It's kind of far away, a 5-6 hour drive but I prefer the 35 minute flight via the puddle jumper (a 17 seat plane that can be a little bumpy  )

We arrived Friday mid-day, and I couldn't wait. I had this thing planned for like 4 months so I was really anxious. So I asked if she wanted to take a walk on the beach. I discretely put the ring box in my shorts pocket and we went for a walk. As we're walking I tell her that I want to write her a poem (she loves poems) in the sand, but I don't want her to see my writing it. I ask her to go sit like 100 feet away and I will get her when it's finished.

So then I go to a clear spot on the beach (secluded beach, almost nobody there to mess it up for me) and I wrote "Will you marry me?" But I pretended like I was writing a lot more since it's supposed to be a poem.

So then I go get her but ask her to close her eyes. So then I brought her right in front of it and I stood behind her and I asked her to open her eyes. There was dead silence for like 10 seconds. Then I whispered "Pssss..." And she turned around and saw me holding the ring box opened with a nice diamond sparkling in the sun. Her mouth opened, but she was silent for about 10 seconds, then she started trembling a little and the flood gates opened :crying: . I asked "yes?" And she jumped on me with a resounding "yes" and started hugging and kissing me.

She later told me that when she first looked down and read it, she was silent because it made her furious. She thought it was another one of my pretend proposals. She was trying to figure out what to do (to me) before she turned around. She was going to slap me in the face before she saw the ring. Phew....

I don't remember who suggested marriage first but it was probably me. Anyway that was very early on. Alex insisted that he wanted to buy a ring and formerly propose, and I thought that was really sweet of him to want to do so, so I agreed. I just asked that he didn't go down on his knee, and that he didn't propose in public as I'd be highly embarrassed.

I visited him knowing that he was going to propose sometime, just not exactly when or how. In the end all of his plans went out of the window. He was so excited to give me the ring that he couldn't wait and proposed one morning in bed (after I'd returned from a trip to the bathroom). :P

My husband said that he would NEVER marry when he met me. Marriage was a failure in the making. Didn't want to end up like his parents. Blah, blah, blah. But now we are planning our 4th wedding anniversary traveling around Lake Michigan in about 6 weeks. At some point he said that he was relieved to be happily married after hearing about his friends' constant struggles with girlfriend after girlfriend. Out of all the couples our age in our wedding photos, only we are still together. I remember when they were taking bets.

Marriage isn't the easiest thing in the world, but so far, it has been worth it.
