FAYETTVILLE, N.C. -- Some Fort Bragg military wives say they'll oppose a fundamentalist church's plan to celebrate the murder of a pregnant soldier from Kentucky.

The Fayetteville Observer reported yesterday that Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas plans a "gospel picket" on the death of Army Spc. Megan L. Touma, 23, of Cold Spring in Northern Kentucky.

The church has picketed at soldier's funerals across the country because it says the deaths are God's punishment of America for tolerating gays.

Police Sgt. John Somerindyke said the church is seeking a city permit for July 16.

The newspaper said no messages could be left at the church's telephone number.

Danell Shafer of Fort Bragg Mommies says they will oppose the church's picket.

Touma was found dead in a bathtub at a Fayetteville hotel June 21. Fayetteville police said civilian and military detectives are treating her death as a homicide, although they have not determined the cause of her death.

Authorities have a person of interest in the case, a soldier the military has said is assigned to the Fort Bragg-based Army Special Operations Support Command.

They also are investigating a letter sent to the local newspaper, purportedly from the killer, that included a symbol similar to one used by the Zodiac killer of the 1960s. Police said a similar symbol was found on a mirror in Touma's room.

Those people are a waste of skin. as a PGR member i have paid my respects at far to many funerals. 3 of which these idiots have showed up at. their reason is for one thing. to make money. they hope to get pushed or shoved and then sue. The PGR goes to a soldiers funeral at the family's request. If needed we form a line between those so called church members and shield the family and friends from their rants. their "so called" reason for protesting cannot connect the dots. they say God has killed the soldier because American has a lax policy on gays. How doe America allowing homosexuals to live here equate to God killing a soldier. It makes no sense. And the sadest thing is that soldier diied protecting those fools right to protest.

well here i Indiana, the governor put a 500 foot limit on how close these idiots can get. the best thing anyone can do is ignore them and not give them any press. thats what they thrive on, that and the hope someone loses his temper and smacks them. which i was fortunate enough to witness at one of their showing. they were protesting in front of a young man who just returned from Iraq. they were signing , we had the line up and had a bike reved up everytime they sang. then they threw the US flag on the ground. the soldier was over his fence so fast and beat the living kimshee out of this guy. the police escorted him away(to the other side of town where the let him walk it off) God bless small town America
