sorry, but i don't agree. Border security and government intrusion in privacy are both tied at #1 in my mind.

I think the lie is simpler than that, the day they sign this bill, these people will be grandfathered in awaiting status.. much like a K3 er.. Just apply for a work permit.. How much you want to bet they will have a temporary work permit process thats so fast it will make your head spin? They will be sorting this ####### out for years, people will be getting in this line forever.

they can stand in line for deacades for all I care-I just don't want to see anyone get screwed-I mean those of us that have filed the paperwork, waited, paid the fees-actually did things the "legal" way. I know nothing in life is fair, but I will snap if millions get visa's quicker than everyone else.

what got me about the whole speach, (yes, I watched it, kinda hard to miss it as it invaded Grey's Anatomy as it did ) was that he said he doesn't favour amnesty. And in the next breath said that any illegals here now who've been here for several years and have made roots, kept a job and raised a family, will simply have to pay a fine for breaking the immigration laws, and then apply for citizenship.

Sure, they have to get in line behind the rest of the applicants, BUT, they're by-passing everything else from how I heard it. They don't have to apply for green card, they don't have to return to their home country, they just pay a fine, and then send in their application for citizenship, wait a couple of years, then take the oath.

How is that deterring further illegal immigration? So they have to pay a fine. BFD! It'll probably amount to whatever they would have paid for processing fees for the proper visa to enter in the first place.

Only it didn't quite work but it certainly made those employers of illegals happy (and the corporate leg is quite important to party fortunes). After all, about 20 years ago another president promised to crack down on employers, and you see how far they got...

Concerning another aspect of his speech: As to the guest worker program without path to citizenship, awesome plan, man! Creating a second-class labor pool lacking the rights of citizens or even residents is like reinventing a nineteenth-century labor system, in which Chinese workers were imported to build the railroads but due to race-restrictions couldn't gain citizenship. Best thing is that it led to a huge anti-Chinese backlash because not only did it depress wages it led to the importation of Chinese laborers as strike-breakers thus eliminating Americans from jobs.

i did not think it would arijit..i think president bush, is walking a line to try and get dems and gop to support his version..he needs some of the far right wing...but he did not go far enough to appease them and if he did he lose the others support...

I don't think there is much left (or right ) he can do in garnering support from either side. Game over...

I don't think there is much left (or right ) he can do in garnering support from either side. Game over...

i think so..i think he no longer leads like he did the 1st term..now, he is an unpopular lame duck president and the gop have distance themselves from him

The other night, watched a channel 9 news piece on immigration (sunday night here in Denver) with panel with ppl like, ex gov Lamm, Tancredo, Mayor Hickenlooper (his ppl HATE you calling him Lickenhooper... just trust me on that), plus some extra ppl... immigration lawyers too...

all danced around the subject of ppl coming here for jobs illegaly because they KNOW that we amnesty every 15 yrs or so (lately anyway), and they just pay a fine and all is good (previous "buy downs" anyone??), and let us not forget.... Big Biz'ness will hire them regardless of what laws are actually on the books.

So, for a whole hours debate... nothing was mentioned about stopping the leaky faucet at the faucet... but in the drain. So if local ppl ignore the root cause... why wouldn't the country's most elected official also ignore the problem and throw money at band-aide solutions.

yeah maybe bush really drank the kool-aid. He must of spiked it up with a lot of voka and other alcohol
