...not saying I totally understand it, but in my HS Religion class we were taught that all sin originates with pride. The original sin of Adam was a sin of pride.

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said of Pride "inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin (1,77) ... the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule."

From a past discussion on PRIDE i see it interesting all the different ways people look at that word. What is your opinion? is pride good or bad? what makes it become a good thing, or bad thing. Do you see it more in one group compared to another? What part does religion play?

I do ask when speaking of other groups or religions we keep it nice and dont point fingers

Black pride = good

White pride = bad

need a second helping of guilt?

So I think that it's like any word from our language - it really depends on the connotation of the word.

From Wikipedia...

Pride is a lofty view of one's self or one's own. Pride often manifests itself as a high opinion of one's nation (national pride), ethnicity (ethnic pride), or appearance and abilities (vanity). Pride is considered a negative attribute by most major world religions, but some philosophies consider it positive. The opposite of pride is humility.

........

Etymology

According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, Proud comes from late Old English prud, probably from Old French prude "brave, valiant" (11th century), from Latin prode "advantageous, profitable", from prodesse "be useful". The sense of "having a high opinion of oneself", not in French, may reflect the Anglo-Saxons' opinion of the Norman knights who called themselves "proud", like the French knights preux.[citation needed] Other names for pride include superciliousness and overweeningness.

.......

Judaism

Judaism, using Pride in the sense of hubris or arrogance, denounces it - the phrase "Pride goes before a fall" is a paraphrase of a passage from the book of Proverbs, in the Old Testament. Many more verses of the Tanakh/Old Testament speak of Pride and arrogance. "Blessed is that man that makes the Lord his trust, and looks not to the proud, nor to those that turn aside to lies." (Psalm 40:4) "Talk no more exceeding proudly, nor let arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed." (I Sam. 2:3)

So flag waving isn't a very humble thing to do if you are religious? Sounds about right.

That's what I'm thinking as well. To a religious person, they would consider that like wearing your heart out on your sleeve. There are accounts in the Gospel where Jesus points out those who make public spectacles of their alms giving, so I could see how some of the so-called expressions of American patriotism would be something they'd shy away from.
