I'm having a minor panic attack…….so I'm sending in my I-751 at the end of the month…..then I will get the NOA, which extend my conditional green card for a year. So I will be legal until oct 2009. What happens if I still don't have a new green card by oct next year?? Do I have to leave my job?? I don’t know why, but I'm starting to worry about this. We can't afford for me not to work.

Thanks

If you haven't been approved by the time your GC has been expired for a year, you would go make an INFOPASS at your local district office, and ask for the I-551 stamp, which would extend your status for either 6 or 12 months (some people have gotten a 6 month stamp, others have gotten a year stamp). Many of us have had to go get the stamp, it usually is a painless process.

As Cassie said :) . No need to worry - just a minor inconvenience and life goes on.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

And if you're still married by that time, you would've had 3 years of residency. You can apply for citizehship. You don't have to wait for the I-751 approval. I believe you still need to get the stamp while waiting for your citizenship interview.

we are in the same situation right now. My husbands 1 year extention after filing the I-751 expires this month. we just received a letter asking for more documents from us. I am still gathering the documents ( i will mail them monday) but obviously we wont be approved in time so we went to an INFOPASS appt. today to try to get the stamp. We were told we have to mail the requested documents first and only when the service center receives them and logs them into their sytem can we get the I-551 stamp.

Just thought it might be a useful tip before someone else takes a day off of work to go to an INFOPASS appt.

Silly us, now we know
