In california my husband was able to take the driving test and get a permit by showing his visa, which proves he is here legally. he will be taking the behind the wheel test soon. He was also able to get a california id with his just visa, because we havent applied for aos yet, we are waiting to get closer to our 2nd year anniversary to do that. He was so happy to get his id.....now he doesnt have to carry around his passport for identification, unless its border patrol :D

Kobby tried to get his permit but the man behind the desk did not want to process his papers because he said that Kobby's visa would expire soon (at that time)....He refused even after being shown the marriage certificate

Just did not make any sense....

It is best to print out their own regulations and show them if they don't get it. If they still don't get it ask for a supervisor or go to another office and keep trying........suggestion for anyone reading this and running in circles.

ExactlyOmoba! there is frequently no quality control when it comes to training. You will bypass much by showing them their own regulations. That is exactly what I did and I took it with me but fortunately I got an experienced representative and didnt have to show it

Where can I get this info so that I can print it?

There is a link under downloads for social security here on VJ.

I gave a copy of the regs to Bassi to take with him today to apply for a ss card and he had to use it. He said they told him no at first, then he gave them the papers I shared with him and they told him to wait, then they came back and told him that he could apply for a social security card. And they did it and gave him a receipt and the card should arrive in two weeks. Can't beat VJ advice for making the process easier all around!

Bassi hasn't even cracked the book to take the test. So, I haven't thought much about it. I need to file AOS, and somehow I feel like I should be doing something related to it. But I know that I sent for the vaccination supplement, so I have to wait for that anyway. So, I guess I'm good. I hope I don't spend the money before I file. I'm known for those types of things.

I DITTO what Asante Maroon said...regarding the Driver's Licence for New York, I need information too, like what documents you will need in order to get the permit.

ZAINAB Lol Your Bassi has not cracked the book yet?...my Kwame is speed reading the book, and he says I rush things, but every time I turn around he is jumping on the next thing. He says he wants to be able to drive before the Winter gets here because I keep scaring him that it gets sooooo cold when it snows that he will get frost bites the size of quarters by his ears and any exposed body parts when he goes outside lol....just teasing him a lil.

I was wondering if driving in Ghana is anything like the driving I experienced in Nigeria?

An unbelievable experience that will forever remain in my mind :o One thing is for sure...Once you acquire driving skill like that, I would think you can tackle just about any type of situation on US streets (except I think that grasping the concept of red lights, and stop signs might be a challenge).

Saying that they drive "agressively" is a major understatement. I can't think of words to use to describe it at all. I don't think I have a desire to learn there once we start visiting his home on a regular basis. It's hard enough for me to open my eyes as a passenger.

I've heard that Ghana is worse than Nigeria. No one can beat the drivers in Mexico...ahhhh, it's a total mess. I saw my life flash before my eyes several times while I was there.

It's funny you mentioned the red lights. This past year, Liberia started getting red lights installed at intersections...after 14 years of civil war and no electricity. Drivers started having accidents because they were not accustomed to people having to stop in the street at a red light.
