Desmond Clark was Nalisha Gravely's first love, according to a close family friend.

He was the father of her child.

He was "like a son" to one of her family members.

But "everyone knew" that he abused her, said Shareka Adams, Gravely's cousin.

Clark has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Gravely's death Saturday. Police say Clark, 22, shot the 19-year-old Nalisha multiple times while she hid in a broom closet of a West Side Taco Bell.

Gravely and Clark were well known to police. The man had been arrested or charged more than a dozen times in the past several years, mostly in connection to alleged domestic violence incidents involving Gravely, his on-and-off girlfriend.

To people who knew her, Gravely was just "Lisha," a young woman who wanted nothing more than to care for her son and be the best person she could be.

"Lisha used to read parenting magazines," Adams, 23, said. "She wanted to be a good parent. All she did was smile and laugh."

Adams and a large group of Gravely's family and friends spent Tuesday afternoon at the Advanced Auto Parts store on the West Side trying to raise money for Gravely's survivors. They said they worried that her family wouldn't be able to afford to pay thousands of dollars to cover her funeral costs. Lisha, who attended Capital High School, was one of seven children.

Marquis Gravely, the victim's 23-year-old brother, said his main concern right now is the welfare of Lisha's two-year-old son.

He said his "little sister" had been devoted to the little boy, whose name has not been made public.

"She cared for people," Marquis Gravely said. "Lisha never hurt nobody."

Lisa Groves, a family friend who helped organize Tuesday's fundraiser, said Gravely had shared concerns about her safety.

Groves said Gravely had told her she feared Clark would kill her, and that the man was "controlling."

But Groves said he remained in Gravely's life because he was her "first love" and her baby's father.

At the time of Gravely's killing, Clark was on court-ordered probation stemming from an incident last year involving Gravely, according to court records.

Clark had previously been accused of shooting, choking, stabbing and kidnapping Gravely in a series of incidents dating back at least four years, according to criminal complaints filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.

"Everyone knew (about the abuse)," said Adams, Gravely's cousin. "There is no excuse for domestic violence, no matter what. If you feel the need to put your hands on a woman then you need to get help."

Charles Williams, another cousin, blamed the court system for allowing the situation between Clark and Gravely to escalate.

In March, a Kanawha County judge ordered Clark be put on probation, finding that he was not likely to commit another crime.

Williams, 45, said he had always considered Clark to be "like a son." Clark had grown up with his own child, Williams said.

Even now, "I don't hate him, I just hate what he did," Williams said.

He said with Clark now facing a murder charge, he feels like the couple's son already has lost both his parents.

Gravely's friends are planning another fundraiser for today at Audio Illusions, on 4th Street near the Taco Bell where Gravely was killed.

Their goal is to raise $10,000 for the victim's family.

King helped let the scumbag who killed my Uncle off with 5 years. They had an argument in a bar. The killer (Greg Boggess) said "I'll coming back, I've got something for you". He returned 1/2 hour later and shot him in the head. The Supreme (joke) Court of WV said that King hadn't properly instructed the jury on the definition of premeditated murder.

Unfortunately, this story is so common today. Judges are far too leniant on these kind of "criminals" and they continue their horrid behavior over and over again, with little or no consequences. Sadly, these cases often result in the death of the victim.

I used to work in Domestic Violence for city government here in Washington state and I saw way too many cases where the woman would say things like "he's the love of my life", "he's the father of my child", etc. These are never reason enough to stay with a man who is abusive, but most women who suffer abuse also suffer from significant low self esteem and believe they either deserve this treatment or will never find anyone better.

My heart goes out to the victim's son and family and I hope the abuser is jailed for a very long time.

Okay, never mind. I was just a little upset when I wrote that. It's really not Desmond Clark's fault. It's society's fault. Mr. Clark should be let free....again. And if he does something like this again, we're really going to have to take a serious look at ourselves as a society.

But I think we should draw the line somewhere...maybe 200 strikes and you go to jail???
