Four years ago in Wisconsin, wife was able to get a probationary driver's license with her SS card that we received after applying for and receiving her EAD card with the I-765 application. But she was driving here with her international driving license that was approved by my insurance company. But today, she needed a valid green card to renew that license, her card was expired, and went through hell with our governor trying to explain exactly what a one year extension was. They finally gave in and renewed her license after a week of sending tons of faxes. This varies from state to state, best to go into your local DMV office and talk to a human being.

I really got to wonder why the states are even issuing driver's license's, they did issue a license to a retarded kid that injured me severely, but they were immune from any liability from issuing that license in the first place, only the kid's insurance company was held liable in a court of law. So if the DMV isn't liable, why are they issuing? Seems more logical the institution covering the liability should issue that license. State however did revoke that license for that kid, but that was way too late for me. Another guy had his license revoked that was subject to seizures, but only did minor damage to my vehicle.

When stuff like this happens to you, you really question our system. Driver's license is good though for picking up tickets at airlines and cashing personal checks and nice to have if stopped with a burnt out license plate lamp.

Oh, also in Wisconsin, don't recall the exact year, they unlisted all the phone numbers for your local DMV office, call an 800 number and get to talk to an answering machine that tells you to get online to make an appointment.

that was a bad experience there, actually i did call DMV here and checked their website as well...apparently DMV offices do not answer calls, hahaha, just with menus...and the website is incomplete, no info for foreigners on immigrant/k visas etc...

in any case thanks very much for the info, i'll go to the DMV office itself and bring my intl license SSn like you did for your wife

Ha, in that instance, also took my wife to the DMV for two reasons, easier to drive her than to explain how to get there, most important reason was to make sure she could drive here with her international license.

Can recall when a license was only four bucks with a DMV station in every dinky little town, even with a population of 900 people. Today it's 30 bucks and almost impossible to set up a drivers test appointment as the DMV have been centralized to only the much larger cities. Poorer services at much greater rates appears to be the trend, had to take my step daughter 120 miles away for her tests, our nearest one was booked up solid for the next six months. But let her drive, almost had a heart attack, but least with that experience learned enough to pass the test.
