Moving to US

Now that I have mu Visa, the next step is to get organize to move.

I am hoping that some of you would be able to give me advice or tips on which moving company to use or what the best and cheapest way is to move my possessions. I was considering renting a small UHaul thingy and attach it to the back of my car, but my fiance thinks that's not good for the car.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If I don't do the u-haul thing, I will use their container system. It is a 6x8x9 foot cube, I think, and they drop it off at your house, you load it and lock it, and then they pick it up and deliver it to your USA address, where you unload it.

I used a moving company, and it was pretty easy and cost about the same as it would have to rent the U-Haul truck (too much stuff for trailer attached to car).

Whichever you decide, just make sure that all the proper paperwork is done. If you take the stuff yourself in a U-haul, you and your stuff clear customs at the same time. If you are having it shipped, you have to go ahead, and then send copies to the shipping company of your I-94 and activated visa along with the customs form 3299 (IIRC).

One can get a quote for U-haul on their web site. Expect around 10 mpg for fuel costs!!

I booked my truck well in a months advance, but they couldn't gaurentee me a truck until like 3 days prior!! Truck was filthy inside!! U-haul doenst have the greatest positive feedback!! Would I rent from them again, if I had to do the trip ove? Ya probably, I rather drive it down myself to ensure it arrives safely and I enjoy driving. But if u do go with them, book well in advance and touch base with them periodically to ensure u have a truck.

We were told we had to book a month in advance with U-Haul. This was from Winnipeg. We have been calling around for quotes and haven't found anything cheaper.

I went with Premier Van Lines, which is affliated with Atlas Van Lines in the US for cross border moving. They were excellent. They provided me with all the forms and information necessary for this kind of move, and answered all my questions. Everything I sent made it here with nothing broken or scratched, which is amazing considering I shipped an antique desk and a curio cabinet with glass shelving. It was a bit expensive, but worth it, considering it had to be shipped from Nova Scotia to Oklahoma, and the cost of gas. The staff I dealt with were excellent, and great to work with.

they do Canada to California moves. I am using them for my US to Michigan move, nicest people, great reputation - self move of 10 linear feet (I load, they drive, no uhaul needed)

Thanks everyone for your help. I was trying to find out if any of these companies would drop off crate at my place and pick it up and deliver in California. No luck so far, but will continue my research.

UPack will drop a trailer at your house - you load it, it must be same day, then they deliver and you unload. I had a quote done on line. It seems really cheap compared to a moving company.
