what a heartbreaking hellish experience. This is truly awful for your FIL and family to go through. Im glad you are taking action on it bcz it just isnt right. Also what your FIL went through was very degrading. I wonder who on earth started that whole mess... they should be deported somewhere the same way... (or is that too mean)

Much love to your family during this time... (F)(L) -Tam

I would cal my local news station and expose these dummies.

Add CNN, MSNBC, FOXNEWS etc...

Just a heads up... I was in the US consulate in Morocco and one of the US people behind the counter was "joking" with me about my situation and trying to get married to a Moroccan... There was a man behind me who pulled me aside. He strongly suggested I write an article to the NY Times. My story wasn't anything to me just a jerk thinking he was funny. But yours rings of a story all need to hear. I might still have his card if you're interested?

I cannot imagine my in laws going through that and the shame and humiliation all of you suffered. It will definatly make me think twice before I extend an invitation once my DH is here.

Good! keep us updated! I am glad to hear they made it back to Morocco safely-- in the very least it is a good thing. The germans were where I had my first problem on my way BACK to the US the last time I went through-- they seemed somewhat confused by their own behavior lol... asked me a lot of questions which were repeated, verbatim and then some, at the US POE. They would only tell me that the USA required certain questions from me in Frankfurt. I figured I had reached the limit of times you could travel to an Arab country and not be questioned :) They kept me a while though, and it was kind of interesting to see people's reactions as I was there by teh gate with the armed guards having to answer questions about my husband, my trip, and my prior trips-- including ones that were no longer in the passport I was carrying-- they were in a past passport... so I figured they were looking at a file of my travels. They had dates and everything. I do remember them also asking me about every stamp I had in my passport and asking me about what the Arabic ones said-- I was pretty blunt that I couldn't read it and had no idea-- and that if they wanted to get a translator, fine, but had 15 minutes to board the plane.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Wow. I don't even know what to say except take it as far as possible till you get a reason, a formal apology, and then sue the pants off them. :(

Divorced. To hell with him.

I know you say you're already dealing with a lawyer but could you maybe rethink and go through ACLU instead or CAIR? I only ask because wasn't the last lawyer that you dealt with partially to blame for your huge wait with your husband? I just think that 1) going through ACLU or CAIR could be pro-bono meaning no $$ out of pocket for you and 2) private lawyers sometimes only have their own interests at heart.

Seriously Charlotte seems to have a reputation just from reading this thread so ACLU might be the best way to go here. I hope though whatever you choose to do it proves to be the best avenue for all involved.

The ACLU is definitely not out of the question at this point. The lawyer that we've been talking to is actually in Richmond and has some contacts in Washington. She specializes in Immigration and Customs law and is very familiar with their procedures. She has recommended that we first file for access to those documents based on the Freedom of Information Act. She said that more than likely they will come back and say that it is a matter of State Security and that they don't have to release that information. This will go even further to prove how difficult and unjust they have been through this entire process.

Should we not get access to that information, we will begin to contact Senators and Congress Reps. Should that lead us no where, then that is when we will try through the media.

We are going to be very careful with this and have been documenting everything and everyone that has been involved with this process.

I believe SO MUCH in my FIL, just the enormous generosity of this man and his good character, that I SWEAR I will not stop until this wrong has been righted and at the VERY LEAST he is given a formal apology.

Despicable, deplorable, and utterly shameful ! My heart goes out to your father-in-law, your mother-in-law, your husband, your son -- and of course you. How dare they force an innocent 70-year-old man to spend the night in jail !

I think you are proceeding with steps to address this outrage in a very wise way. Insha'allah this incident will get national attention and the persons responsible in Charlotte will be dealt with very severely -- and before they have a chance to do this to another innocent person.

Thoughts and prayers with you and your family as you seek justice for this terrible and absolutely inexcuseable injustice.
