My 12 yr old daughter is here visiting for the summer and she met the little girl across the street and invited her to go swimming in our pool. A little while latter Shelby says, Can Elsie go in the house for a minute? She needs to go to the washroom. The little girl said Ummm what's a washroom? I need to go to the bathroom!

I told Shelby, They call it a bathroom here hon.

Then they decided to go bike riding and Shelby said to elise, " I just have to go get my runners I'll be right back! "

Elise looked at me and I said , It's ok, she just needs to put on her sneakers.

I am starting to get used to things down here, like instead of saying thank you they say "UhHuh"

I'm even doing that now. And on Sunday I even wore my shoes in my inlaws house! My daughter asked why I still had my shoes on?! I said, Oh it's OK , it's an American thing! " LOL

This totally freaks me out. When I see people walking inside our house with their shoes on it literally turns my stomach because it ruins the carpet a lot faster. But, every one does it! haha I always take my shoes off and people are like, "you don't have to do that..."

Lol! Levi and I argue about who has the accent all the time..... I'm from the midwest and feel I'm void of any accent but he feels the same about his. Totally fun to bug him about it

But honestly, about the Canadian accent, I guess I'm the only one here that belongs to the weird category... I learned my English with the Americans and actually never talked to a real Canadian!

The only thing people tell me ( like clients at the hospital) is that they don't notice it unless I start talking more and faster, like when I come back in the room after the doctor to explain the meds for their pet. So then they are like " You have an accent but I can't tell what it is" so I tell then I'm French and then they say I am pretty good at hiding the French part...

I am correcting myself though, like I used to say " Thermo-meeee-ter" instead of "Ther-mooo-meter" I am putting the accntuation on the wrong syllabus like I would do in French. Another one is "Urina-lie-sis" instead of "Urinalysis" I used to say the Y as "ie".

Nope I've always spoken like the Americans when I was in Canada. Lived a few hours from the border until college when I was right on the border. I never used eh or had the accent (probably too much Seaseme Street - the Original way before the Canadian one came out). Always watched real US tv stations, never the Canadian ones etc. Though my friends developed strong Canadian accents, probably partially because they all worked in blue collar jobs (or doing computer stuff in factories etc).

I noticed when I was working at Chrysler on the assembly line in Windsor or at my old summer job when I was in college for 4 years, the accents in those areas seemed to be extremly strong compared to most others. I noticed thier stong accents when I was living there even.

Now I can hear the accent on my parents and other friends that I never used to be able to. Kind of weird. The language is different, I usually understand what my friends/parents are saying when they say a washroom rather then a bathroom, but sometimes I do have to ask them what the hell are they saying...

Really? I'm confused about this. If you were raised in Canada you would have formed your vowels and sounds in your primary years and as you got older it would have been harder to break all of the aspects of your speech from intonation to semantics and phonetics, etc.

Also, you have always spoke like an American from..? haha Because Americans from Michigan sound a lot different from Americans living in New York. What exactly is it to speak American? Speech pathology is more than just the words or phrases you use to describe things ya know?

Lived in Wales and Australia in my early years as well. Learned a lot from 70 kids TV shows (before they really had Canadian versions). Spoke the Generic Californian TV accent where there were no Abooooooots and and eeeehhhs etc.

Though I did have a really strong Australian accent though when I was younger. I'm sure when I was younger I might have had one, but then having my learning curve thrown out the window when living and going to school in Australia. When I came back it did take me quite awhile to lose the accent. By this time I already had a very different english then the rest of Canadians I knew and guess never picked up on the lingustics or forming of vowels like the rest did as I had gotten older...

I know what ya mean i keep getting the its ok you dont need to take them off. Then they go on to say we dont have the snow or mud to deal with here like you do in Canada. Ok maybe no snow but theres dirt and all kinds of ####### when you walk out that door. God it drives me nuts, I find its just plain rude to walk in someones house and not take off your shoes.

Yes, I take off my shoes all the time, regardless of whose house I'm in. People rarely say anything and I think it's because they can't tell what kind of Asian I am. Best excuse I have for any weird behaviour is to say it's part of my culture... they don't know if it's canadian or my yellow heritage, but it makes them go "aahh" even though they really don't get it.

One time though, I saw Matt lying on the duvet of the bed with his shoes on. He was just asking for an international incident. :S
